Description

I IINITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL M. PERRY, OF PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN coRsETs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,794, dated July 3l, 1866; antedated July 20, 1866.
To all whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. PERRY, of the town of Plainfield, county of Union, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corsets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciflcation, in which- Figure l represents a front elevation of my improved corset, and shows the corset-fastening unlooped at the top, as hereinafter speciiied. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, showing metal stud and loop-plates, which l use to clasp and unclasp the vimproved corset, separated from the rest of the corset; and it is in the improved construction of these parts that my invention mainly consists.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in both the figures.
A A is the stud-plate; B B', the loop-plate; C C', the cloth bodice of the corset; DD, the lacing-cord, byiwhich the corset is fitted to the wearers person.
The lacing-cord D D' is the ordinary and well-known device heretofore in use for that purpose, as is also the bodice C G, which is stiffened by upright springs in the usual manner; yet any improved devices may be substituted for these constructions.
My improvements, as before stated, relate mainly to an improved construction and operation of the clasp-plates A -A and B B' and the parts C' C of the bodice immediately ad, jacent thereto, and are designed not only for the use of the common wearers of corsets, but also for nursingwomen, invalids, and corpulent persons who cannot without great inconvenience or suffering wear corsets of the ordinary construction.
My improvement consists in furnishing one or both the clasp-plates AA and B B' with a joint, E or E', which I place in any convenient point below the upper clasp-hook, F, and so construct the same that when the clasp hook or hooks above the aforesaid joints E or E are released the part or parts of the clasp-plates A and B to which they are attached are free to move outward and to right or left sufficiently to relieve the wearer or to expose the wearers person for nursing, surgical treatment, &c.
rIhe best construction for general use of this my invention known to me, and theone fully shown in the drawings accompanying this specication, has two hinges, E E, which I place diagonally, as shown in the drawings, one on each of the clasp-plates A A' and B B.
G G Gr G" are four loop plates, of ordinary device, attached to the plate E B by rivets in the usual manner, and these loop to the four stud-heads H -H H" H", of ordinary device, and attached to the clasp-plate A A. Now I place the diagonal hinges E E just above the second loop, G" H, so that G H G H', the tops of either side of the corset, may be swung outward and downward, as fully shown at A G G E in both gures of the drawin s.
glhe clasp-plates A A' and VB BJ are each constructed in two parts to admit the free working of the hinge-jointsE and E', parting at said joints, while the upper parts of the bodice C C', being of the usual exible construction and material, fully admit of the free working aforesaid and complete the form of 'my device I most approve.
SAMUEL M. PERRY.
In presence of- HUGO SoHNEELocK, E. GODDAED. h.
