UNITED STATES ATENT 44TIEETCE.
CHARLES'VIRGIN RICHARDS, OF SKOVVHEGAN, MAINE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,613, dated September 15, 1896.
Application filed January 9, 1896. Serial No. 574,804. (No model.)
To all wlw/12, t may concer/b.-
Be it known that l. CHARLES VIRGIN Rien- ARDS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Skowhegan, in the county of Somerset and State of Maine, have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in Waistba-nd-Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to clamps or other supports for drawers and other articles ot' apparel, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is adapted to be connected with the upper inner portion of the waistband of the trousers and which is adapted to clamp and securely hold the waistband of the drawers to the waistband of the trousers; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in the device constructed as hereinafter described and claimed. l,
The invention isfully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accom panyingdrawings form a part, 'in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the waistband of a pair of trousers and a simi-lar portion of the waistband of a pair of drawers, the latter being held in position by my improved clamp or support, which is se-V cured to the waistband of th-e trousers; Fig. 2, a front view of 1n yimproved clamp or support; Fig. 3, a side view thereof; Fig. 4, a side view showing the parts in a different position; Fig..5, a front view of the device as shown in Fig. 4; and Fig. 6, a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the clamp connected with the waistband of the trousers and holding the waistband of the drawers in position, the latter being shown in, section. l
In the drawings forming part of this speciiication, A 'represents a portion of the waistband of a pair of trousers, ci the lining thereof, and B a similar portion of a pair of drawers, and in the practice of my invention I provide a clamp or support consisting of a back frame D, which is best4 shown in Fig. 5, and which is in the form of a cross, as shown in said figure and in dotted lines in Fig. 2, said frame being composed of a vertical bar d and a top cross-bar d2, and formed at the ends ofthe top cross-bar d2 are eyes or loops d3, and at the bottom of the vertical bar d is a similar eye or loop di. I also employ a wire yoke G, the lower end of which is held in the eye or loop d4 and the sides of which are passed through the eyes or loops cl3 and bent outwardly and downwardly, as shown at g, and the lower ends thereof are provided with outwardly-directed projections g2.
Connected with the'lower ends of the depending portions g ofthe yoke G is a clampingjaw H, which constitutes the front side of my improved clamp or support and which is composed of apiece of sheet metal having inwardly-directed side flanges h, at the lower ends of which are vformed openings or holes h2, through which pass the outwardly-directed portions g2 at the lower ends of the depending sides g of the yoke G The inner end of the jaw H is provided with an end piece h3, simil'arto the side anges h, but which projects up much higher than said side flanges, and formed centrally lthereof is a spring-loop h4, which is curved over in the direction of the outer end of the jaw H and downwardly, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The yoke G and the dependingarms g thereof are composed of spring-wire, and saidloop h'L and the jaw H are preferably composed of spring metal.
The operation will be readily understood from the vforegoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof. The separate sides g of the yoke G are passed through the lining a of the waistband of the trousers, as shown in Fig. l, and secured in position by stitching or otherwise, or` the frame D may be secured to the waistband of the trousers in any desired manner. Vhen the device is thus secured to the trousers and it is desired to connect the waistband of the drawers therewith, the jaw H is bent downwardly, as shown in Fig. 4, and said waistband is slipped up between-the same and that portion 0E the support or clamp which is secured to the trousers, as shown in Fig. 6, after which the jaw H is raised to the position shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 5, and the spring-loop 7b4 will securely clamp and hold the waistband of the drawers in said position.
My invention is not limited to the exact IcoV form of holder or clamp herein described or to the means by which it is connected with the waistband of the trousers, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations in and modications of the construction herein described as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
It will also be seen that my improvement constitutes an effective device and one which is well adapted to produce the result for which it is intended, while being comparatively inexpensive, and it will also be apparent that one of said holders or clamps may be connected with each side of the waistband of the trousers, or any number thereof may be employed, and the same may also be used for supporting other garments or other articles, and for this purpose may be connected with other supports as well as with the waistband of a pair of trousers.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Lett-ers Patentl. A holder or clamp for drawers or other articles which is adapted to be connected with the waistband of aV pair of trousers or other support, said holder or clamp consisting of a back portion to which is secured a spring-wire yoke, the ends of which are directed upwardly and outwardly and curved downwardly in front of the backv portion, and a clamping jaw or plate pivotally connected with the lower ends of said depending portions and provided at its rear end with a curved spring-loop which is adapted to clamp the waistband of a pair of drawers or other article in connection with the back portion when said jaw or plate is folded into a vertical position, substantially as shown and described.
2. A holder or clamp which is adapted to be connected with the waistband of a pair of trousers or other support, and which consists of a frame to which is secured a spring-wire loop the ends of which are directed upwardly and folded forwardly and downwardly, so as to provide depending arms at the lower ends of which are formed outwardly-directed projections, and a clamping jaw or plaie provided with side flanges which are pivotally connected at their inner ends with said projections, and said clamping jaw or plate being also provided at its inner end with a cross end piece on which is formed or to which is secured a iiat spring-loop which is adapted to clamp the article supported between said jaw or plate, and the back of the holder, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 6th day of January, 1896.
