OLIVER W. VHITEI'IEAD, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-IIALF TO WARREN E. BEEGIILY, OF SAME PLACE.
FENCE-Peer.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,557', dated September 8, 1896.
Application led June l5, 1895.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER W. WHITE- HEAD, of Dayton, county of Montgomery, State of Ohio, have invented a new and -use- `ful Improvement in Tire Fences; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this speciiication.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wire felices, with a more particular reference to means for preventing the corner-post from rising out of the ground under the strain due to the tightening` of the line-wires from time to time.
The object of the invention is to provide simple and inexpensive means, as well as efficient means, for keeping the post in a proper position.
The annexed drawing shows an elevation of a fence constructed in accordance with my invention.
In describing the same the letter A desig 'nates the corner-post, and B is an adjacent brace-post, both of which are constructed oi tubular iron and are provided with ground points a and l) and flanges a and o.
C and D designate, respectively, horizontal and inclined tubular braces mounted on dowels projecting from collars c, d, and e, that surround said posts, and are maintained in position thereon by pins c c projecting from said posts.
f designates an inclined anchor-cable, one end of which is connected to an arm f', proj ecting from the collar cl and having a loop f in its middle portion that incloses the in clined brace D, and is thereby prevented from moving out of a proper position. The lower end of this cable f is further provided with a loop f", that incloses the lower end of the post A and to which the anchor-rod g is hooked.
7L designates a horizontal tie-wire connected Serial No. 552,944. (No model.)
A in proximity to the anchor-cable f. The anchor-rod g also hooks to this tie-wire. The post A is prevented from rising by means of a pin t", upon which the loops f" and 7L rest. There are additional openings t" in the post A, into which the pin t' may be inserted and the loops f" and 7L placed in a higher position should it be desirable. The tie-wire h is wrapped on the post B and is twisted and carried to the post A, where the loop h is formed.
The flange ct/ on the post A may be dispensed with and a boss or enlargement formed on said post for the loops f" and h to bear upon, but the construction shown in the drawing is deemed preferable.
A corner-post constructed and braced in the manner described in the foregoing specication is capable of withstanding a great amount of strain without rising from the ground. The anchor serves to maintain both posts in the ground, while the tubular braces O and D and the tie-wire are substantial means for preventing any side movement of said posts.
I-Iaving described my invention, I claim- In a fence, the combination with a cornerpost A, an adjacent post B, and upper horizontal brace O, of an inclined brace D reaching from a point on the lower end of post B above the ground to the upper end of post A, a horizontal guy-wire 7L running from the lower end of post B below the point of attachment of the bra-ce D, and looping around the lower portion of post A at which point itis supported on a pin t' projecting from said post A, an inclined guy-wire f running from the upper portion of post B to the lower portion of post A where it is looped around said post A above the guy-wire h, and a groundanchor g to which the guy-wires 7L and f are connected, whereby means are provided for preventing said post A from rising out of the ground.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of June, 1895.
OLIVER w. wnrrnnnnn.
