P; ALBITH. MATCH SAFE.
(No Model.)
PaterltedA S-ept.i8 1896.
UNITED STATES .l
PATENT OFFICE.'`
FRIEDRICH ALEITH, OF OASSELTON, NORTH DAKOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- I'IALF TO J. M. ALEITH, OF SAME PLACE.
MATCH-SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,369, dated September 8, 1896.
Application filed March 23, 1896. Serial o. 584,495. (No model.)
vbe easily manipulated and which will effect-4 ively serve for its intended purposes.
My invention also has for its purpose to provide a match-safe -in which the slide portion is so arranged in connection with the holder proper that the matches can also be fed into the holder by moving the slide portion and which has the dischargeend so arranged that in case of the match being thrown above the receiving-ledge it will be caught in a suitable trough provided to receive the same.
With other minor objects in view, which will hereinafter be referred to, the invention consists inta match-safe embodying the peculiar combination and novel arrangement of parts, such as will be first described in detail and then speciiically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which-f Figure l is a view illustrating my invention asin use. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, the parts being in their normalposition.
Fig. 3 is a similar view, the slideportion bethe match.
The standard Bis slotted vertically at b and in the top has a notch D, said top having a groove E produced therein, the purpose'of all such details appearing farther on.
The holder C is essentially cubical in shape vand has an opening c at the rear end of bottom, through which the standardB passes, and
the sides of the holder are grooved vertically at cto receive and-guide the standard.,` The bottom of the holder slopes rearward, as shown at c2, so that when the holder is moved upward upon the standard (see Fig.3) the top of standard rests within said holder, and the matches rolling down the incline will force one match into the grooveV E, and as the holder is slid down to its normal position the top of standard holding the match emerges from the top of holder and is so held until picked from the standard, the notch D enabling the match to be readily grasped, and the rear side of the holder is alsocut away, as shown at F, to permit the'match to be grasped. A pin or screw G passes through the bottom of holder and rests within the slot b, thereby limiting the upward movement of the holder and preventing the same being pulled away from the standard.
The top H of the holder also slopes rearward, but stops a short distance in advance of the rear side of the holder in order to permit the standard to pass above said top, and as the sides of the holder extend above the top thereof an inclined trough will be provided whereby the -feeding of the holder is facilitated and, furthermore, any match held upon the top of standard will be caught by said trough in case of displacement, inasmuch as the rear side of holder projects above the top of standard and prevents it falling to the rear. The holder is preferably provided with a 'glass front K, so it can bc seen when the safe is empty.
' The manner of lilling the safe is as follows: The holder is moved upward upon the standard to its limit (see Fig. 3) and matches placed lengthwise upon the inclined top, and as there is virtually a trough at this pointa handful can be placed thereon at a time. The matches pass down between top and rear of holder into the body of holder, and after the safe is illed the holder is lowered until it rests upon its base. projects above top of holder and carries a IOO rlhe top of standard IBS match in the groove, which match is picked off when one is desired. When another match is needed, the holder is moved up, bringing the inclined bottom of holder above the top of standard. The bottom being inclined feeds another match upon the standard, and by dropping the holder upon the base the standard projects up, carrying another match.
When the matches are exhausted, the safe is refilled, as before described. The glass front enables one to see easily how many matches are Within the holder.
The base is made large enough to prevent the safe being tipped over, and the abrasive portion provides a scratch to strike the match upon.
It Will thus be seen that I provide an eX- ceedingly cheap and simple contrivance, one which Will feed one match at a time and one Which can be refilled Without taking the portions apart. It will also be noticed that the inclined bottom of the holder guides the matches to the top of standard, and the inclined top also guides the matches to the rear when filling the holder.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An improved match-safe, comprising a base and a standard, said standard having a groove in the top thereof, and a notch produced also in the top intermediate the ends, and the holder adapted to slide upon the said standard, said holder having the grooved sides in which the standard slides, said sides projecting above the top of the holder, the top and bottom of said holder being inclined in the same direction, the rear side'of the holder projecting also above the top of the holder and having a notch intermediate its ends, substantially as shown and described. 2. An improved match-safe, comprising a base and standard, said standard being slotted longitudinally, grooved transversely at the top, and having a notch also at the top intermediate the ends or sides of the standard, and the holder adapted to slide upon the standard, said holder having the inclined top and bottom, said top and bottom being inclined in the same direction, the sides of said holder being grooved and in Which the standard slides, the sides of said holder projecting above the top of the holder, and the rear side of said holder projecting also above the top of the holder, said rear side being cut away as at F, and a pin passing through the holder and through the slot of the standard, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as shown and described.
