SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,228, dated September 8, 1896. Application tiled May 27,1895. Serial No. 550,850. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern: A

Be it known that I, J AMEs RAusEY FINLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Delphi, in the county of Carroll and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners ;v and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improved window-sash holder and fastener whereby a sash may be held in any position to which it may be raised without liability of falling, and when lowered the sash will be automatically locked, so as to prevent raisingthe same from the outside.

v The `invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a window casing or frame and a sash provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, on an enlarged scale, of my combined holder and fastener detached. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.

In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a window-frame, and 2 the sash, which may be of any ordinary or suitable construction. The frame near its lowerend is provided with a catch 3, with which engages a dog 4, hereinafter described.

The numeral 5 designates the fastener, comprising a plate 6, having a lug 'Zat each end, formed with an aperture 8 for the passage of a screw, by which the device is secured to a window-sash. Secured to or formed with this plate is a slotted plate 9, having its side bent over, forming a plate 10. The plate 9 is inclined, as shown, and through the slot therein projects a` finger-hold 12, forming part of or secured to a wedge-shaped plate 13, the sides -of which are bent outwardly, forming parallel wings 14, between which is located a rubber block 15. The said plate and wings form a housing forl the rubber block, and in the base of the housing is formed arecess 16, in which is located the upper end of a coiled spring 17,

Y the lower end of which rests upon a plate 18 at a right angle to the plate 6. This plate 18 is formed with an extension 19, forming a iin-` ger-hold. Pivoted to the outside of plate 10 is a dog 20, connected by means of rod 21 with the finger-hold 12. The free end of this dog when the sash is lowered is adapted to engage under the catch 3 and lock the sash in its closed position.

The operation will be readily understood. When the sash is raised, the rubber block is forced against the window-frame and by frictional contact therewith is held in its raised position. To lower the sash, the block is depressed by bearing upon the finger-hold 12, when the sash will fall by gravity, and when so lowered and the pressure on the iinger-hold released the dog will be forced inward, so as to engage under the catch 3, whereby it will lock the sash and prevent it from being raised from the outside. To unlock the sash, the finger-holds 12 and 19 are grasped between the thumb and linger, and by bearing down upon the former the dog will be thrown out of engagement with the catch.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- The combination with a window-frame andthe catch secured thereto, of the sash, theplate secured thereto, the inclined slotted plate having its sides bent at an angle, the wedge-shaped housing having a finger-hold projecting through said slotted plate, the rubber block located in said housing, the fingerhold at the lower end of the plate secured to the sash, the dog pivoted to the said slotted plate, the connecting-rod pivoted to said dogL and to the finger-hold projecting through the slotted plate and the coiled spring interposed between said slotted plate and the plate secured to the sash, substantially as described.
