AXLE-LUBRICATOR.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,168, dated September 8, 1896.
Application filed August 8,1895.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN R. ROBERTS, a citizen. of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Axle-Lubricators; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, whiohform a part of this specification.
My invention relates to axle-lubricators, and has for its object a cheap and efficient method of distributing the oil evenly over the entire surface which is to be lubricated.
In the drawings which accompany this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the axle, showing the bearing broken away, exposing'the wick through the slot in the axle. ,Fig. 2 is adetail of the tube in perspective, one end of the tube being closed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the axle, showing the tube in position. Fig. 4. is a perspective view of a portion of the axle, showing the tube and wick in position. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the axle with the bearing in section, showing the opening through which the oil passes by means of the wick to the parts to be lubricated.

A wick E is inserted in the tube D to afford even distribution of the oil through the opening 12 It will be readily understood that the oil, feeding from the oil-cup C by means of the wick, will pass out through the opening d and be distributed thinly and evenly over the entire surface to be lubricated.
"What I claim is- In an axle-lubricating device, the oil-cup located on the axle, the journal of the axle provided with a channel leading from said oil-cup near the periphery, and a slot throughout the length of the journal opening said channel to the surface, a cylindrical tube provided with a narrow slot throughout its length inserted in said channel, the walls of the chamber retaining the tube in position, and a wick held in said tube with its free edges extending out through the slot in said tube, and the slot in the journal throughout the length of said journal, substantially as and for the purpose described.
