SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,101 dated September 1, 1896.
Application filed January 28, 1896. Serial No. 577,202. (No model.)
of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a superior gate of that class in which the gate is centrally pivoted on a lifting lever or levers and provided with means by which it may be moved to either side of the center of these levers.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved gate, illustrating it asclosed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the gate, illustrating it as open in positive lines, while in dotted lines the gate is illustrated in the elevated position it assumes when passing from an open to a closed position, or vice versa; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the gate closed, the guide-posts being in horizontal section on the line 3 3'in Fig. 2.
In carrying out the invention a guide-post A is located at that end of the fence B which is adjacent to the gate-opening O. A second guide-post A is placed parallel to the postA at one side of the gate-opening, and these two posts are connected, preferably, at the top by a cross bar or beam 10. In addition to the guide-posts two other posts I.) and D are employed, located one at each side of the gate-opening, both of the posts D and D be- .ing in alinement with the guide-posts; and each of the outer posts D and D is provided with a horizontal arm 11, which extends over the road which the gate is to cross.
The gate E may be of any desired construction and of any desired size. The gate is connected with the guide-posts A and A by two lift-levers 12. and 13. These lift-levers are pivotally connected with the top central portion of the gate by means of a bolt 14 or the equivalent thereof. One of the levers is located at each side of the gate, and the lower ends of the levers are pivotally connected by a pin 15 or in any other approved manner, one lever with the inner face of the lower portion of the guide-post A, and the other with the corresponding portion of the opposing guide-post A. The gate is made of such thickness that it may freely pass between the two guide-posts, and the length of the levers 12 is such that when the gate is in its full-- closed position the lower ends of the levers will be opposite that end of the gate which is between the guide-posts. A balance rope or link 16 is attached to the upper face of the gate equidistant at each side of its center, and at the central portion of this balance link or rope an eye 17 is preferably made, and two pull-ropes 1S and 19 are attached to the aforesaid eye 17, being carried upward over pulleys 18 and 19 attached to the cross-bar 10 of the guide-posts A and A, and from these pulleysthe aforesaid pull-ropes are carried through suitable apertures in the guide-posts inopposite directions, the rope 18 being taken over a pulley 20, attached to the arm 11 of the outside post D, while the rope 19 is carriedover the corresponding pulley located upon the arm of the opposing outer post D, and the ropes 18 and 19 are usually made to terminate in handles 22. A channeled keeperpost 23 is provided at the side of the road opposite that at which "the guide-posts are located, the channeled keeper-post being adapted to receive the advanced end of the gate when in its closed position, so as to prevent the gate from having lateral movement.
In the operation of the gate, the gate being closed, if either one of the pole rods or ropes are carried downward the gate will be raised and in such manner that the end farthest from the guide standards or postswill be lifted first. This is due to the connection of the balance ropes or links 16 with the gate at each side of its center, which causes the application of power to be (with respect to the posts A and A) beyond the pivot 14 at every operation. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with guide-posts and a gate adapted to travel between the said posts,
of lift-levers located at each side of the gate and pivotally connected with the upper central portion thereof and with the lower portions of the guide-posts, a balance rope or link secured at its ends to the upper portion of the gate at each side of its center, pullropes attached to the central portion of the balance rope or link, and carried over guides to opposite sides of the gate, the said guides being located above the gate and at one side of its center, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a guide-post, a lifting-lever fulcrumed adjacent to the post, a gate centrally pivoted on the lifting-lever, a connection attached to the gate at each side of its point of attachment to the lifting-lever,
and a lifting-rope attached to the connections and supported by the guide-posts, substantially as described.
