To all whom t mag/concern.-

Be it known that I, JEHEMIAH GOLDBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extension-Cases, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to extension-cases; and it consists of a novel construction of locking device therefor, whereby said case can be readily held and locked in the desired position when it has been adjusted to the required capacity, provisionY being thus made for entirely dispensing with buckles, straps, tbc., which have been heretofore employed in bags of this character.

It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.

Figure l represents a perspective view of a traveling-bag embodying my invention, the same being shown in locked position. Fig. 2 represents a sectional View, on an enlarged scale, through the locking device and ends of the bag, showing the same in unlocked position. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view taken on the same line as Fig. 2, but showing the bag in locked position.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a traveling-bag, the same consisting of the upper and lower sections B and C, the former of which may be provided with the handle D, the ends E, and the sides F, the lower section being provided with the end portions G and the sides H, said lower section being adapted in the present instance to telescope or be inserted within the upper section.

J designates a portion of the locking device employed, the same consisting of the plate K, which is attached to the side portion G of the lower section, said plate being provided with the slotsL therein, which are adapted to be engaged by the tongue N, which is constructed as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, and is provided with a handle P, said tongue having the neck N, which is square in the present instance, and

is j ournaled in the casing Q, which is pivoted' at R to the frame S, the end portion E of said upper section being slotted, as at M, for the passage of said tongue N. The device Q is normally held open bythe spring T, and is made of two plates suitably secured together, in the lower portion of which is the block U, supported upon the spring V, bent, as seen in Fig. 1whereby the upper face of said block U is held normally in contact with the squared portion N', the tumbler WV, which is located above the latter, being operated by the key 6o X, (seen dotted in Fig. 3,) which is inserted in the keyhole Y, the two positions the tumbler may assume being seen in Figs. 2 and 3. It

'will of course be understood that each end of the bag is provided with the locking device seen in Fig. 1, the construction of each being substantially the same.

The operation is as follows: IVhen the parts are in the position seen in Fig. 2, it will be evident that the capacity of the bag can be 7o varied by adjusting the sections B and C relative to each other. When the desired size has been attained, the device is swung into the position seen inFig. 3, the tongue N passing through the opening M in the upper section B and through one of the slots L, and is then turned by means of the handle P, so as to bear against the inner face of the plate K, the openings in the casing Q, in which the neck N of the said tongue is journaled, be- 8o ing of sufficient size to permit such turning'. The tumbler W is now turned by means of a key into contact with the upper face of said neck N and, together with the block U, which bears against the lower face thereof, holds it firmly and prevents turning.

The specific construction of the device to operate the tumblerN has not been shown in detail, as the construction of the same may be varied. 9o

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An extension-case consisting lof upper and lower sections, aplate having slots therein, secured to one section, a locking device on the other section, a tongue which is adapted to enter said slots, a handle on said tongue for operating the same, and separate means for locking said tongue, substantially as deroo scribed.

2. An extension-case consisting of two sections, a plate having slots therein, secured to one section, a lock on the other section, a

spring between said lock and the wall of said casing, a tongue which is adapted to enter' said slots, means for operating said tongue, and separate means for locking the said tongue in certain positions, substantially as described.

3. In an extension-case, a plate with slots therein, a hollow swinging piece with openings in the front and back of the same, a tongue having a square neck working in said openings and provided with a handle,a springcontrolled block in said swinging piece bearing against the under side of the neck of said tongue, and a tumbler in said piece adapted to bear against the upper side of said neck, said tongue being adapted to enter either of the said slots in said first-mentioned plate, and when turned to be in contact with the inner face of the said plate, said parts being combined substantially as described.

An extension-case, consisting of upper and lower sections, the slotted plate K attached to the lower section, the device Q pivotally attached to the upper section, the tongue N having the squared neck N mounted therein, the block U in contact with said neck, the spring V supporting said block, and the tumbler W above said neck, the latter having the handle P, substantially as described.

5. In an extension-case, the slotted plate K adapted to be secured to a section of said case, the frame S having the hollow piece Q pivoted therein, the spring T forcing said piece Q outwardly, the tongue N with the neck N and handle P, the block Uand turnbler W in said piece Q, said parts being cornbined substantially as described.
