Be it known that we, CHARLES EDWARD GREEN and THOMAS HENRY GREEN, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, and residents of 49 Hatton Garden, London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Candle-Lamps, (patented in Great Britain, No. 4,795, dated March (3, 1895, and in France, No. 251,094, dated October 21, 1895,) of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to utilize certain known detail appliances in conjunction with an unbreakable exterior in imitation of a candle of any desired color.

For the purpose of this invention we make what is termed a candle-lamp of a metal tube open at one end for the reception of a screw-ferrule, which has as part thereof a bezel ring or fillet as a projecting bead for the double purpose of giving finish and for securing an exterior tube upon the metal tube. This ferrule is provided with a socket or plug, also screw-threaded for a screw-pin to be rotated up and .down in, said pin having a head to prevent its withdrawal and also a triangle or square tapered socket piece which can move in or between a series of bent strips in order to expand them to fit large-size candlesticks and to contract by reversing the rotation of the screw expander.

In lieu of the expansible strips a rubber socket or thimble can be used, also capable of expansion by the expanding socket-piece, or such thimble may be tapered and be corrugated on the outside for self-adjustment and for holding power ina candlestick when placed in position.

The upper end of the metal tube has a fixed bezel ring or fillet with an undercut or channel for the reception of one end of a celluloid, xylonite, or equivalent tube, or said outer tube maybe of toughened glass or other material of a color corresponding to a fancy or other candle, the 'whole being surmounted by a socket, shade-holder, extinguisher, or the like, as desired.

The candle proper of any kind is within the metal tube and is pushed up by a spring to compensate for the combustion in a manner well known.

Ourinvention is represented in the annexed drawings.

A is a metal tube; B, a ferrule; G, abezelring with turned-up and inwardly-curved outer edge as part of ferrule, forming an annular recess for reception of lower end of tube A and exterior tube D, of glass, celluloid, or other material stained or colored to represent a fancy-colored or a plain candle; E, a screwthreaded pin centrally arranged in ferrule O for up-and-down motion therein. The lower end of the screw=tl1readed pin E is formed with a head F and occupies a position in a square cone or equivalent shaped socket-piece G, the spread-out portion of the socket-piece serving to expand the wings H H, which by their springiness and form cleave to the sides of same, so that the wings are capable of being expanded or collapsed by being turned to the left or to the rightto fit the socket of a candlestick, a chandelier, or wall-bracket.

I is a top rim of tube A, having an under annular channel for the reception of the upper end of the glass, celluloid, or other exterior tube D. Above the rim 1 the tube A is punched from the inside to form a couple of projections J J for engagement in the bayonet-shaped slots K K of the nozzle L, which locates the candle proper, M, this being kept up to the shoulder N of the cap as consumption progresses by the helical spring P, which is within the tube A and bearing on the inner flange of the tube A.

The outside diameter of the cap L coincides with the interior diameter of the band Q of the shade-holder R, this being composed of two curved legs S S, connecting the band Q, with the crown of the holder, on

the legs S of the shade-holder has an extinguisher-lever T pin-jointed to it in such manner that when the cup U is up it hangs back slightly beyond a vertical line and bears against the leg, partially retained there by the chain V and weight W until it is found necessary for extinguishing the candle, when the cap can be thrown over or lowered onto the wick to extinguish the flame.

As a modification or in substitution for the expansible plug G II, we purpose making a conical-ended plug with the rim 0 and acentral screw-threaded portion B and to employ therewith a fluted rubber cone-shaped tip X, the strew-threaded center engaging the screwthread at the lower end of the tube A.

The cone-shaped fiuted rubber tip X willenable the candle-lamp to be used without the expansible plug GH. In either case the same facilities are oifered for the fitting within the socket of a candlestick, chandelier, or a Wall-bracket.

What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a candle-lamp, the combination of inner tube A,loose-fitting outer tube D, screwferrule ring B, 0, central screw-pin E, inclined-face socket-piece G, expansible wings H, H, internal spring P, fixed upper Illll I, nozzle L, shade-holder Q, R, S, with extinguishing-cup U, and weighted chain V, as specified and substantially as shown.

2. In a candle-lamp, fixed inner tube A, outer loose tube D held in position between fixed rim I and adjustable ferrule-ring B, C, said ferrule-ring havingcentral screw-pin E, socket G, expanding wings H, H, as specified and substantially as shown.
