FASTENING FOR TRUNKS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 0. 566,148, dated August 18, 1896.

Be it known that I, J OSEPH DERITIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit,

' ence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to a device for strengthening and securing trunks which may be easily applied thereto and which does not interfere with the ready access to the interior.

The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of a jointed clamping frame, as I more fully hereinafter described'and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the frame detached. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the frame applied to a trunk.

A and A are loops having sides a and bottom b, preferably formed of steel or other material having the requisite strength, and adapted to pass around beneath the trunk near each end thereof.

B and B are two other loops similarly formed, which are connected to the loops A A and are adapted to pass around the ends of the body of the trunk, preferably just below the cover. The loops A and A are connected together by the diagonal tie-rods C O and D .D',which are pivotally connected to the loops,

preferably at about the center of the sides a, each pair being pivotally connected together at a point slightly below the cover of the trunk.

E is a loop or bail hinged at one end to the rear rods 0 0, adapted to pass over the cover of the trunk and to be locked to the front rods D D. These hinge and lock connections are preferably formed by providing the pivotpins 0, uniting the rods 0 G and D D, with the bifurcated heads cl, between the bifurcations of which the ends of the bail E are adapted to engage, the rear end being pivots ally connected thereto.

The frame thus .constructed may be readily engaged with the trunk to be secured, the

rods 0 O and D D allowing the loops to separate far enough to admit of their engagement with the end and bottom of the trunk. The bail E may then be engaged with the cover of the trunk, and as its point of connection with the links 0 0 comes approximately in line with the hinges of the trunk the cover of the latter may be opened at any time without removing the bail.

To look the frame, the trunk-cover is closed and the end of thebail is secured by a padlock or other locking means to the head (1 of the pivotal connection between the links D D at the front of the trunk. In thus engaging the bail with the links the latter will act as toggle-levers, which as their pivotal connections are drawn up to ren'gage with the bail will firmly clamp the loops A and B to the bottom and end of the trunk, thus forming a perfect securing means, and one which also braces and increases the strength of the trunk.

, What I claim as my invention is- 1. As a trunk securing device, a frame comprising two pairs of bottom and end loops for the opposite ends of the trunk-front and rear toggle-lever connections between said pairs of loops and a bail for the cover of the trunk hinged to the rear toggle-lever and adapted to be locked to the front toggle-levers to clamp the frame to the trunk.

2. As a trunk securing device, a frame and two pairs of bottom and end loops A and B for the opposite ends of the trunk, the loops of each pair being hinged together diagonal tie-rods O O and D D forming front and rear toggle-lever connections between said pair of loops, and the bail E hinged to the pivotal connection of the rear toggle-lever, and adapted to be locked to the pivotal connection of the front toggle-lever.
