- This invention has relation to handles for bicycles, and more particularly to that class wherein the handle-bar is pivoted in the center and the handles can be raised or lowered and at the same time the distance between them increased or diminished at will, and the object is to provide a simple, cheap, and convenient, as well as practical, device of this kind that can readily be adjusted to the requirements of the rider; and to these ends the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

ADJUSTABLE HAN D LE FOR BICYCLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,068, dated August 18, 1896.
Application filed April 28, 1896. serial No. 589,415. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER S. ER'B, a citizen of the United States, residing at, yertown, in the county of Berks and e of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Handles for Bicycles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to handles for bicycles, and more particularly to that class wherein the handle-bar is pivoted in the center and the handles can be raised or lowered and at the same time the distance between them increased or diminished at will, and the object is to provide a simple, cheap, and convenient, as well as practical, device of this kind that can readily be adjusted to the requirements of the rider; and to these ends the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the same figures of reference indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved adjustable handle. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the plate removed and the handles depressed. Fig. 4 is a similar view with the handles elevated. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line of the handle-bearings.
The steering-post 1 is provided with integral ears 2 3, in which are bearings 4L 5 for one end of the studs 6 7 on the inner ends of the handle-bars 8 9. A removable plate 10 is also provided with bearings 12 13 for the opposite ends of the studs 6 7 and this plate is removably secured to the steering-post by screw 14, as shown. A sliding bar 15 is vertically adjustable in a recess 16 in the steering-post, and is held in place therein by the plate 10. The upper end 17 of this verticallysliding bar 15 is enlarged laterally and formed with two horizontal slots 18 19, located in the same plane and which receive pins 27 2S, whichare rigidly secured to the inner ends of the handle-bars, and it will be seen that by raising or lowering the sliding bar 15 the studs 27 28 are brought closer together or farther apart, and consequently the handles correspondingly adj ustedthat is to say, they are simultaneously raised and separated or lowered and brought closer together.
A circular casing 20 is secured to the outside of the plate 10, and it formsa guide for a bolt 21, the point 22 of which is adapted to enter one of the adjusting-holes 23 in the sliding bar 15 and lock it at any point, thereby securing the handles in any position to which they may be adjusted.
The point 22 of this bolt 21 is held in place in the holes 23 by a spiral spring 24:, encircling the stem of said bolt, which passes through the head 25 of the casing 20, and it is provided with a milled head 26, by means of which it is operated, and from this construction it will readily be seen that by withdrawing the bolt and adjusting the handles to suit, then releasing the bolt, and allowing it to be forced by the spring into one of the adjusting-holes the handles are rigidly locked in position.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination with the steering-post, and the removable plate, provided with bearings for the studs on the ends of the pivoted handles, of the sliding bar provided with the horizontal slots located in the same plane and adapted to engage the studs on the ends of the handles, so that the adjustment of one handle will automatically and simultaneously adjust the other handle, and means as described for locking said sliding bar in position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with the steering-post, and the removable plate, 10, provided with bearings, A 5 and 12 13, for the studs, 6 7, on the inner ends of the handle-bars, 8 9, which are also provided with the pins, 27 28, of the vertically-adjustable bar, 15, formed with the horizontal slots, 18 19, adapted to engage the pins, 27 2S,'and provided with a series of adjusting-holes, 23, and the spring-bolt, 21, sub-
