To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SALLIE O. NOBLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city. of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protecting-Pockets for Ranges, &c., of which the following is a'full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of the In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is' a perspective view of one face of a protecting-pocket constructed in accordance with my.

invention. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the opposite face of the same, showing the two sections of the pocket detached; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional elevation of the device on the line 3 3, Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, A A represent the two sections of the pocket. Each'of these sections is formed of wire-nettin g so arranged and folded as to form a bottom a and ends 6 and a face 0, preferably curved or convex.

The edges of each section are preferably covered by or secured between a metallic band d, which covers and protects the raw edge of the wire-netting and prevents the unraveling of the wires nearest the edge. The band also serves in a measure to strengthen and stiffen the sections of the pocket, so that they will not be likely to be bent out of shape in handling.

The section A is slightly smaller than section A, so that it may be telescopically adjusted within the latter and the two sections may be moved toward and. from each other,

so that the length of the pocket may be adjusted to accommodate the length of the opening to which it is to be applied.

In order to keep the sections-in proper relative position, the band d, which forms .the edge of the section A, is provided with guiding flanges, fingers, or tongues c, which bend around the edge of the section A, and the section A is similarly provided with tongues or fingers c, which embrace the edges of the section A, so that the two sections are held -in proper position, and a degree of movement is permitted which is sufficient to accommodate an adjustment of the pocket to openings of any of the ordinary lengths.

For the purpose of securing the pocket in position each end b of the sections is preferably provided with a locking-hook g, adapted to engage with either the side or top wall of the opening to which it is applied, the ends of the hook projecting beyond the body of the sections for sufficient distance to give them a slight spring, so that when engaged with the side or top wall of the opening they will more readily be held in proper position to lock the pocket in position, or the ends of each sectionmay be provided with rigid fingers g, which may be engaged with the vertical side walls of the opening when the sections are moved from each other, thesections being first contracted in this case before the pocket is applied to the opening and then moved apart, so that the 'fingers when projected inside the opening may engage with such vertical side walls.

It is clear that other construction of securing device for holding the pocket to the range may be employed.

With a device of this character all danger of accidental fire from flying coals is avoided, and the device may be attached to draft or fire-door openings of any length, whether pro vided with hinged or sliding doors or with.

removable doors, as may be found in some classes of stoves, as the lower walla, of wirenetting, will catch and retain any particle of cinders or flying coal which may be thrown out through the opening.

Having thus described my invention,what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
