No. 565,983. Patented Aug. 18, 1896.
x-lillllll UNITED 4 STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST HELD, or EREEPORT, `ILLiNoIs, AssIGNoR To THE sTovER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, or SAME PLACE.
HINGE.
SEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,983, dated August 18, 1896.
Application iiled March 12, 1896.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST S. HELD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hinges, and more particularly to improvements in means for the ready attachment of Y one of the leaves of a hinge to a door or casing and its ready and convenient detachment therefrom.
The invention is fully described and eX- plained in this specification and shownin the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevationof a surface hinge provided with the means for attachment and detachment constituting my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a plate adapted to be permanently attached to a door or casing and having a rotatable button adapted to engage a hinge-leaf. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the line 3 3, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the plate shown in front elevation in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the leaf through the line 3 3, Fig. l, and a side elevation of the stationary plate and its button detached from Athe hingeleaf, but adapted to be brought into working relation thereto by movement in the direction indicated by the arrow in the figure; and Fig. 6 is a transverse section through the line 6 6, Fig. 4.
In the views, A A are two suitably-connected leaves of a surface hinge, the leaf A being formed with screw-holes, adapting it for attachment to a door in the ordinary manner, and the leaf A being formed, as hereinafter described, for the purpose of adapting it for attachment to a casing without the insertion of screws in the leaf itself and its detachment from the casin g without the remo val of any screws whatever. To this end the leaf A has in its rear or inner face a recess a, adapted to conform substantially to a plate B, which may be securedpermanently to the casing by means of screws, as shown in Fig. 2. The plate B is provided with a rotatable button made up of a disk C, lying in a suitable recess in the rear of the plate, a shank serial No. 582,893. (No more.)
C', lying in a central opening in the plate, and a flattened head C2, lying outside or in front of the plate and adapted to pass through a slot s, approximatelyat the center of the leaf A'. In addition to the slot s at its center the leaf A is also preferably formed with two openings a2, correspondingin position to the screw-holes in the plate B, these screw-holes being preferably en circled by annular flanges b b, adapted to lie in the openings a2, and thereby more definitely iiX the relation of the plate to the leaf and-at the same time addto the symmetry of its form.
- It is evident that the plate B may be seated in the recess in the rear face of the leaf A by swinging the head C2 into line with the slot s, moving the entire plate in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 5 and then turning the button into a position transverse to the slot s, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The plate being thus in position upon the leaf with the screw-holes of the plate in registration with the holes a2 of the leaf, the leaf maybe attached to the casing byinserting screws in the screw-holes of the plate B, the same as if the plate were an integral part of the leaf. The leaf may then be detached from the casing by simply turning the button ninety degrees until the head is in line with the slot s, and then moving the leaf forward or away from the casing until the slot has passed over the head, and it may evidently be replaced by a reversal of this operation.
In order to bind the leaf the more firmly against the plate B, I prefer to make the front face of the disk C of the button with two inclined spirals and also to incline the inner or rear wall of the plate against which the disk is pressed, as indicated in Fig. '6., By means of this construction the button is loose when in position for the attachment of the leaf,
