Description
UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
JosErH MCKNIGHT, or PoMEEoY, oHIo.
`IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTER-CUTTER SHARPENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,589, dated July 24, 1866.
To all lwhom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, J osEPII MOKNIGHT, of Pomeroy, in the county of Meigs and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Implements for Sharpening Knife- Blades; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to an implement for sharpening the knives or cutters of mowing-machines, scythe-blades, knife-blades ot' table-cutlery, Ste.; and it consists in so securing two cutter or sharpening blades to one end of a suitable handle that they can be adjusted with regard to each other to accommodate any bevel of the knife-blade, beit more or less, as will be hereinafter more particularly explained, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawings, of which- Figure l is a central section through the handle of the sharpening-implement, taken in the direction of its length; Fig. 2, an end view of the sharpening or cutter blades, Fig. 3, a detail view of one part of the implement.
Similar letters of referen ce indicate like parts.
A in the drawings represents a handle, made of wood, turned in any suitable or proper shape, as shown in Fig. l, through the center of which handle, and in the direction of its length, extends a loose shaft or rod, B, having upon its lower end a cap or head, a, and with a thumb nut, b, (seen in detail in Fig. 3,) screwed upon its upper end. On this rod B, between its head ay and one end, c, of the handle A, are placed two sharpening or cutter blades, C and D,each made ofthe general shape shown in Fig. 2, and with their respective edges d d and ff on their straight arms g and right-angular arms h beveled, the cutterblade C being next to the handle end and the other one, D, between it and the shaft-head a, and both being tightly held and secured by simply turning the thumb-nut b in the` proper direction to draw the shaft B up through the handle A, and thus its head b toward the handle end and between the two, tightly binding the sharpenin g-blades.
When desired to adjust the sharpeningblades to any bevel of the sides of the knifeblades or cutters lof a mowing-machine, iirst turn the thumb-nut b in the proper direction to loosen the same, when, swinging them on the shaft B, bring their outer ends so that the opening 7L between them (see Fig. 2) shall correspond to the bevel of the knifeblade, where secure the same by turning the nut b in the proper direction therefor. The knife-blade to be sharpened is then drawn through said opening h between the sharpening-blades, from its end secured to the knife-handle toward its outer end or point, until the requisite sharpness has been given to the blade, the cutters of a mowing-machine being similarly sharp- 'ened without detaching them from the cutterbar of the machine by simply drawing such portion of the sharpening-blades G and D- th at is, either its straight or right-an gular arms, (previously adjusted, however, to the proper bevel, as hereinbefore eXplained,) as the relative positions of the cutters will permit.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--l The right-angular arms C D, in combination with the rod B, handle A, nut b, and head a, constituted and arranged in the manner and for the purpose herein specied.
JOSEPH MCKNIGHT. Witnesses:
BENJAMIN WADMAN, WILLIAM G. PENNEY.
