I HORSE-COLLAR AND PAD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,757, dated August 11, 1896.-

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERIC O. KRIEGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of West Bend, in the county of Washington and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse- Oollars and Pads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention has special reference to a construction which enables the pads to be readily and quickly applied to the collar when needed and as easily removed without calling in the aid of a harness-maker or other person skilled in the art; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter and subsequently claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a horse-collar and pads embodying my invention, portions of the figure being broken away or in section to better illustrate details of construction. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views drawn to an enlarged scale, Fig. 2 being a horizontal sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 3, with the lacing-cord omitted.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a horse-collar of a general construction similar to those in common use and having fiat creases a between the after-wale b and fore-Wale a. Each crease a is provided with a series of tubular rivets d d, passed therethrough and clenched or spread, so as to secure them in place and form threading-tubes.

B B represent the pads, which are reduced in thickness along their front edges and then shaped so as to conform to the contour of the creases between the two wales of the collar, these reduced portions 6 of the pads being likewise provided. with threading-tubes f, preferably formed also of hollow rivets clenched and secured to place upon the pads and registering in location with the just-described threading-tubes in the collar.

0 0 represent the lacing-cords preferably employed.

The operation of my invention will be readily apparent from the foregoing description of its construction taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

When it is desired to secure the pads to the collar, the former are (one at a time) brought to the proper places so that the described threadingtubes in both of the parts exactly coincide in line, and then the lacingcords O are passed in and out through said tube from one end of the device to the other, and the article is ready for use as a padded collar. WVhen it is not necessary to use pads, the cords O are as readily unlaced as they were laced, and hence by. my invention a padded collar can be converted into a plain one, or vice versa, with the greatest ease and without loss of time.

While my invention in its entirety is designed for newly-manufactured collars and pads, it is applicable to those now in use, and the creases for the hames in such collars and the forward edges of the pads may be punched through and supplied with tubular rivets, as shown and described hereinbefore.

My said invention forms a very simple and yet secure device, and is absolutely free from the dangers of breakage and misplacement incident to the employment of extraneous devices for securing the pads to the collars.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination with a horse-collar having its creases provided with series of threadingtubes, of independent removable and restorable pads whose front edges are similarly provided with series of such tubes, adapted to exactly register with those that pass through the collar-creases, and a lacing-cord for engagement with both series of threading-tubes.
