HOSE-SUPPORTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,251, dated August 4, 1896.

Be it known that I, LEONARD G. ABBOTT, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hose-Supporters, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to that class of buckles and clasps commonly known as hose-supporters.

My object is to produce an improved article for connection to the upper part of the hose and to which the supporting tape or tapes can be readily attached.

It comprises a body provided with a springtongue anda lever hinged upon said body, a gripping-loop hinged to said lever and having an enlarged opening about midway its length and then contracted adjacent to its outer end, so that said opening is of less width than the diameter of the head of a button erected upon said body, and whereby the hose is gripped around said button. To release the hose, the lever is thrown forward, which slides the loop downward until the button is in the enlarged opening, and then the loop is readily raised over the head of the button, and thehose or other garment released.

lt is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of the supporter closed. Fig. 2 is a plan 01": the back face of the body. Fig. 3 is alike View of the front face thereof. Fig. 4 is a front plan of the lever. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the supporter closed. Fig. 6 is a like view of the same open. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section of the supporter, in which the ends of the tongue are integral with the body. Fig. 8 isa front elevation of a supporter, in which the lever 7 is constructed of wire instead of a iiat metal plate, as in Fig. 4.

A is the body, shown as consisting of a flat strip of metal provided with a button 2 adjacent to one end and with the slots 3 at the ends to receive a tape d. By suitable dies longitudinal slits 4 are cut in the body, and their ends lare connected by a transverse slit 5, this creating a tongue 6 integral with the body at one end. Upon this body, by means of suitable hinges 8, shown as stamped out, a lever 7 is hinged, consisting in Fig. 4 of a iiat piece of metal and in Fig. 8 of a piece of wire, said plate being provided with a suitable slot to receive the tapeb. A loop 9, consisting of awire or perhaps of a piece of sheet metal, is hinged to said lever at l() and is provided with an enlarged opening ll and a contracted throat l2, said opening being of greater width than the diameter of the head of said button, and said throat being of less width than said diameter.

In Fig. 7 the tongue 6 is shown as created by simply cutting the slits 4 in said body and omitting the slit 5, so that both ends are integral with said body, and whereby the stud 13 of said lever, when it is swung upon the supporter, will spring said tongue rearwardly and at the same time spring the body on both sides thereof in the opposite direction, as shown in Fig. 7, while in the other figures said stud will simply spring the free end of said tongue backward. In either case the spring of the tongue, or the tongue and body combined, produce strain to hold the lever in the closed position, and this will prevent any accidental unlocking or unfastening of the garment from the supporter.

What l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

l. Ahose-supporter comprising a body provided with a button near one end and a longitudinal spring-tongue in combination with a lever hinged to said body, a stud thereon engaging with said tongue and a loop hinged to said lever and provided with an enlarged opening near its center, and with a contracted throat near its free end and adapted to be reciprocated to bring it into or out of engagement with said button, by the swing of said lever to grip or release the garment from engagement with said button.

2. The combination with a body provided with a longitudinal spring-tongue and a button erected near the end of said body, of :t spring-controlled lever hinged to said body and engaging with said tongue, mld at loop hinged to said lever near its Center and provided with L central opening of greaterwidth than the diameter of said button and a throat of less diameter.
