Description
. R. WILSON.
Stove Grate.
' Patented June 27, 1848 UNITED TAES AT NT FTCE.
ROSWELL WVILSON, OF HALFMOON, NEW YORK.
GRATE FOR STOVES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 5,652, dated June 27, 1848.
State of New York, have invented an Im proved Girate for Cooking and Other Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of a cooking stove with which my improved grate is combined, and Fig. 2, is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a furnace with flaring sides and placing between the lower edges of the same a longitudinal screw, forming the base of'the furnace upon which the fuel rests, and by turning which, the fuel is agitated in the furnace and the ashes removed from the same.
Similar letters indicate like parts in both figures.
a, is the screw; 6, b, are the fire plates forming the sides of the furnace; cl, is the furnace door, through which fuel is supplied to the same; 0, is the axle of the screw ato the end of which a crank or lever is applied for turning the screw; f, is the damper, or register, for regulating the admission of air to the furnace; g, is the ash pit.
By turning the screw a, the fuel will be agitated in the furnace, the asheswill fall between the threads of the screw, and will be discharged into the ash pit, as the screw is revolved.
The air of combustion will pass from the ash-pit into the furnace, through the spaces between the thread of the screw, and the axle of the same. The fire walls of my improved furnace may be constructed of any suitable material, and may be combined with all descriptions of stoves in any convenient manner.
Having thus fully described my improved furnace for stoves, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The combination of a screw (for the fuel to rest upon) with the sides of a furnace, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
ROSWELL WILSON.
