SELDEN FRANCIS VILLIAMS, OF BOW'DOINHAM, MAINE.
DUST-PAN ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,059, dated August 4, 1896.
Application filed April l2, 1895. Serial No. 545,485. (No model.)
To all when?, t may concern:
Be it known that I, SELDEN FRANCIS WIL- LIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bowdoinham, in the county of Sagadahoc and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Dust-Pan Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of household articles known as dust-pans.
The object of the present invention is to provide a dust-pan with a spring foot-piece which will serve to support the back of the dust-pan and at the same time form a holding device adapting the operator to retain the dust-pan in the desired position without the aid of the hands, thereby leaving the latter free forhandling the broom.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of a dust-pan with the improved spring foot-piece applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Similar numerals of reference designate eorrespondin g parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, l designates a dust-pan of any usual or preferred construction, to the bottom of which at a suitable point is secured a pair of metal loops 2, spaced a 'sufficient distance apart to receive the bent terminals of an open wire frame or loop, (indicated at 3.)
The frame or loop 3 is formed from a wire blank, the central portion 4 of which extends transversely of the pan in rear thereof. After forming such transverse portion the terminals are bent downward and again upward, as shown, to form bearing-points 5, adapted to rest upon the floor. The transverse portion 4L is of such length and the downwardlyentendin g points 5 are spaced such a distance apart as to form a broad bearing or foot which will serve as a firm and steady support for the dust-pan. After forming the bearingpoints 5 the terminals are extended forwardly in parallel relation to each other, and are given a further bend at 6 to form stops or rests 6, which immediately underlie the bottom of the dust-pan and serve to support the same firmly. At their forward ends the terminals are bent to form oppositely-extending journals 7, which are hooked at their extremities, as indicated at S, to prevent their being withdrawn from the loops 2.
A meta-l plate 9 extends across the wire frame or loop at or near the rear thereof, and is secured thereto by bending or looping its side edges around the parallel portions of the wire frame, as shown at lO. This plate is provided with a number of holes punched therein from the lower side, as indicated at ll, thus forming a number of jagged and upwardly-projecting points for firmly engaging the sole of the shoe of the operator.
By means of the construction above described and by forming the wire frame or loop from wire of the desired gage a yielding spring-foot is provided, which may be engaged by the foot of the operator and move along the floor, as required, thereby leaving both hands free for handling a broom.
The foot attachment is firmly secured to the bottom of the dust-pan and the hooked extremities 9 ofthe terminals effectually prevent the escape of the foot-piece and serve as stops for holding the dust-pan at the desired angle.
l The device is extremely simple, is inexpensive in construction, and will be found very advantageous and convenient in use.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a dust-pan provided with a pair of eyes or loops secured thereto, of a spring foot-piece made from a wire blank havinga transversely-extendin g straight central portion, a pair of oppositelydisposed downwardly-projecting points or bends at the opposite ends of said transverse portion for engaging the floor, the parallel longitudinal side bars the transversely-exiending oppositely-bent ends of the terminals engaging said eyes or loops on the dust-pan, the hooked extremities of the terminals preventing the withdrawal of the foot-piece from the dust- IOO pan and also regulating the angle of the foot In testimony that I claim the foregoing as piece, the rests formed by bending the side my own I have hereto axed my signature in bars intermediate their ends said rests bearthe presence of two Witnesses.
ing directly against and beneath the bottom SELDEN FRANCIS VILLIAMS. 5 of the pan, and the perforated and roughened IVitnesses:
foot-plate secured to said Wire frame, sub JOHN A. GONE,
stantiaily as and for the purpose specified. ALTON C. SMALL.
