IMPROVED TRUNK.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 56,499, dated July 17, 1866.

Be it known that 1', LUTHER J AcKsoN, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New J ersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trunks and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot this specification, in Which- Figure l represents a sectional tront elevation ot this invention when the trunk is open. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detached sectional view of the bellows-shaped inside cover or tray.

This invention consists in the arrangement of spring-stops on the ends of the inside cover or tray in such a manner that when said tray is opened it is retained by the spring-stops and not liable to close down spontaneously, to the great annoyance of the person packing or un packin g the body of the trunk.

It consists, further, in the arrangement of a bellows-shaped or expansion tray, in combination with the inside cover of a trunk, in such a manner that if said tray is not required it can be collapsed, and the inside cover is then simply used in its capacity of a partition between the body of the trunk and the main or outside cover, but it' said tray is to be used it can be readily expanded, and room is obtained for a large quantity of articles of any desired description.

Arepresents a trunk which is provided with a cover or lid, B, and with an additional or inside cover or tray, C. When this tray is closed down it is sustained by lips a catching over the edges of the trunk, and when it is opened it is retained by spring stops or braces b, which are secured to its ends, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. By these spring stops or braces both the outside and the inside cover are prevented from closing down spontaneously, and the body of the trunk can be packed or unpacked with ease and facility, and without danger that the cover or covers will come down on ones head or fingers.

The tray C is made bellows-shaped, or so that it can be extended or compressed. When said tray is not to be used it is compressed,-

and the inside cover, When brought in this shape, takes up but little room, and serves simply as a partition between the main cover and the body of the trunk; but if said tray is to be used it is expanded by means ofv suitable braces, and in this state it affords ample room for stowing away a large quantity of goods or other articles.

This trunk is simplein its construction. Its cost is little if any more than that of an ordinary trunk, and it combines advantages not contained in any other trunk known to nie.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The spring stops or braces b, in combination with the inside cover, C, of a trunk constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The bellows-shaped or expanding tray or cover C, in combination. with the trunk A, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
