SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,874, dated July 28, 1896. Application filed September 23, 1895. Serial No. 563,809. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM W. DIRKSEN, of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests, of which the following,taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to adjustable and portable head-rests adapted to be detachably secured to the back of a car-seat.

My object is to produce such a device which may be easily and readily attached and detached from a oar-seat or similar places where head-rests are temporarily desired and at the same time be so arranged and constructed that they may be folded so as to occupya minimum amount of space and pack away in a grip; and to that end my invention consists in the several new and novel features and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the claim hereunto annexed.

It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which- Figure 1 is a front View of the device complete ready to be attached to the back of a seat. Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof. Fig. 3 is a rear View of the device after it has been folded. Fig. 4 is a perspective view thereof. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail of the knuckle connecting the spanning arms. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail showing how the head-rest is locked to any height desired.

a are pieces of wire bent at their upper ends, substantially triangular in form, as shown at a, the lower side of the triangle being connected by spanning arms a, having a knuckle-joint b, all constructed substantially as shown. Upon this web the head rests, it being so connected to the triangle as to form an incline, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to adapt itself to an easy position for the head when thrown back.

0 and cl are V-shaped springs secured upon the shank or wire a, as shown, in any ordinary manner, preferably, however, by winding the ends around the shank to form the eye 0. These eyes 0 are made large enough to allow the lower ends of the shanks a to pass freely through them for the purpose of adjusting the head-rest to any desired height. The wire cl starts from the rear pivotal connection, and is first carried up, then forward and down to form the base of the eye, which between one end of the plate e and the lug f upon the eye, so as to throw it out of line for the purpose of making a lock to hold the rods a at any height desired.
