SPRING BED-BOTTOM.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,869, dated July 28, 1896.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER COLE, a citizen of the United States,residing at Bridgeton, in the county of Cumberland and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new, useful, and valuable Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention has relation to spring-bottoms for beds, &c.; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bedstead with my springbottom attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the bedstead and .part of the spring-bottom, showing how the bottom is attached to the bedstead. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a modified form of the spring-wire.

The bottom consists of spring-wires 1 1, which extend from the head to the foot of the bed. Each wire is provided at certain intervals with the loops 2 2. The said loops in the adjoining wires 1 1 are opposite each other and extend across the bed in substantially a straight line. (See Fig. 1.) The rubber pipe or wooden rods 3 rest in said loops 2 2. Said rods extend across the bed, as shown in Fig. 1. At each end the wires are provided with a perpendicular portion 4:. At the foot of the bed the perpendicular portions 4 4 of the wires pass behind a lateral strip 5, said strip 5 in turn being secured to the footboard of the bedstead. The back of the strip 5 may be provided with recesses to receive the perpendicular portions of the wires 1 1. Said strip 5 may extend all the way across the foot of the bed or it may be made up of sections 6 6, as shown in Fig. 1, each said section being secured to the foot-board of the bedstead as above described.

At the head of the bed the perpendicular portionsA. of the wires pass behind the lateral strip 7. The back of the said strip 7 may also be provided with recesses to receive the perpendicular portions of the wires, and the said strip 7 may also be made in sections, as

described for strip 5. The strip 7 is provided with a number of thumb-screws 8 8. Said thumb-screws pass through the strip, and the inner end of the screw is adapted to bear against the perpendicular portion 4 of the end of the wire, as shown in Fig. 2. Thus the tension of each individual wire may be regulated by releasing the thumb-screw 8 and drawing the wire tighter or loosening it as the case may require, and then the thumbscrew can again be brought to bear against the end of the wire and hold the wire firmly in its proper place. The wires may be doubled, as shown in Fig. 3, or they may be placed together in larger numbers without departing from the'spirit of my invention.

The sections composing the cross-strips 5 and 7 may each be provided with any number of wires and as many sections may be used as the width of the bedstead will require.

The mattress of the bed will rest on top of the spring-wires 1 1, and the cross-rods 3 3 possess sufficient elasticity to make the bottom at all times yielding, and at the same time the said cross-rods prevent the springwires 1 1 from being bent or pressed out of shape. The cross-rods 3 3 are just a trifle smaller than the loops 2. (See Fig. 2.)

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a spring bed-bottom a number of wires extending from the head to the foot of the bed, each wire having at its end a perpendicular portion, lateral strips secured to the bed, said strips having recesses, said recesses receiving the perpendicular ends of the wires, thumb-screws extending through said strips, each said thumb-screw adapted to independently impinge one perpendicular end of a wire against the bed.
