PUZZLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,846, dated July 28, 1896.

Application filed October 8, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that LALBERT Enwry SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to puzzles, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which involves the use of disks or plates on which are formed or placed the numerals from 1 to 9, said disks or plates being movable in transverse and vertical slots formed in a plate or board, and the solution of the puzzle consists in manipulating said plates or disks so as to arrange them in lines which when added will make one hundred.

The invention is fully disclosed in the fol lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved puzzle device, the parts being in the normal position; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the parts in the position which they assume when the puzzle is solved, and Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

In the practice of my invention I preferably employ a back plate A and a front plate B, which are separated by a narrow space or chamber 0, which is formed by means of side and end strips 5, which are placed between the back and front plates A and B.

The plate B is provided with a slot D, which is in the form of an inverted U, or yokeshaped, and communicating with each side cl thereof are transverse slots E, each of which communicates with a vertical slot F, and arranged transversely of the vertical slots F, and below the bottom-thereof, is a slot G. Over the slots G is a sliding plate g, having formed, printed, or otherwise placed thereon the characters which represent one hundred, and arranged so as to slide within or over the slots D, E, and F are a plurality of circular plates or disks H, which are preferably nine in number, and on each of which is placed one of the numerals from 1 to 9, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and each of these plates or Serial No. 565,026. 71,, by means cf which the plate or disk is held 'in place, while being free to move in the slot or slots. The plate 9 is also similarly provided, and arranged crosswise on the slots F are two bars K, which are also similarly provided and which are adapted to slide back and forth over said slots.

The solution of the puzzle consists in manipulating the plates or disks H so that the adding thereof will make one hundred, and this operation is exceedingly difiicult, although it may be accomplished by the exercise of judgment, skill, and ingenuity, and the solution is shown in Fig. 2, in which the plate 9 is moved forward beneath the slots F, and one of the cross-bars K is moved downwardly adjacent thereto. The disks bearing the numerals 2 and '8 are then manipulated into the position shown at the bottom of the right-hand slot F, and the disk bearing the numeral 9 is arranged in the left-hand slot F,adjacent to the numeral 8 on the right, and the cross-bar K is then placed in the position shown in Fig. 2, and the other disks or plates arranged in the order shown therein, in which the numerals 1, 3, and 4 will appear in the left-hand column and the numerals 5, 6, and 7 in the right above the bar K; and the addition of these columns will produce the number 98, and the addition thereto of the numeral 2 will produce 100, all of which is clearly shown in said Fig. 2. This solution is, as hereinbefore stated, exceedingly difficult without the knowledge of the order in which the disks with the numerals thereon must be arranged in order to produce the desired result, and even with such knowledge the solution is not an easy one.

My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts shown and described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.

Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcut-- The combination with a plate or board, provided with a yoke-shaped slot, the sides of which are directed downward, and Vertical slots arranged within said yoke-shaped slot, each of which is in communication with one side thereof, and a transverse slot below the vertical slot, of a plate mounted in said lastnamed transverse slot, on which are formed characters representing one hundred and a plurality of disks or plates which are nine in number, mounted in and adapted to slide in the other slots, on each of which is formed one of the numerals from 1 to 9, and two cross-bars which are also mounted in or ALBERT EDVIN SCHMIDT.
