GAME-rCOUNTER Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 3, 1905.
Application filed A t 29, 1904. Serial No. 222,623.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BENJAMIN MAT- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, Denver county, Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Game-Counters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for keeping count of the points in games with cards, such as high-five,'whist, &c., and also to record the number of games Won on each side.
The object of the invention is to provide a counter which can be placed on the corner of the table, so that each player can see exactly how the game stands at all times without asking.
Another object is to facilitate counting backward, or what card players term in the hole.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in -Which Figure 1 is a front view, and Fig. 2 is a rear view, of the device.
In the drawings, 1 is a rectangular post or upright secured to a base 2 and having a top 3. The front of the post is adapted for keeping count of the points made, While the rear thereof is adapted for keeping record of the number of games won.
The front of the post is provided with four vertical rows of holes 4, which are adapted to receive the pegs usually employed as markers in games of this character. In the center of the post, with two rows of holes on each side, I provide a vertical row of figures 5, each figure having a pair of holes arranged on each side thereof. I leave a space in the center of the row of figures, and on each side of this space the first figure is 1, the second 2, and so on up to 9, reading upwardly and downwardly from the center space, the figures and holes in the upper division being used to count the points gained, while those in the lower division are used to count the points lost. I prefer to paint that portion of the post carrying the holes and figures of the lower division in a different color from that carrying the upper divisionz'. 0., I paint the lower half of the post a different color from the upper half.
The rear side of the post is provided with a central vertical row of figures 6, beginning at 1 at the bottom of the post and reading up to 12 at the top thereof, and a vertical row of holes 7 on each side of the row of figures. As said before, this side of the post is adapted to keep count of the number of games Won by each player.
I prefer to indent the figures on metal plates 8, as shown, and secure these in any suitable manner to the post; but I do not Wish to limit myself to this way of mounting the figures, nor do I wish to limit myself to the exact construction shown, as it is obvious that the details may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A device of the class described comprising a post having a row of indicating-numerals thereon, said numerals increasing in denomination from a central point in both directions, the post from said central point in one direction having a different color from the part of said post extending in the opposite direction from said central point, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described comprising an upright post having a row of digits extending from top to bottom thereof, and rows of holes opposite said row of digits said post having its lower half of one color and its upper half of another color.
8. A device of the class described comprising an upright post having a row of indicating-numerals thereon, said numerals increasing in denomination from a central point in both directions, the post from said central point downwardly having a different color from the upper part thereof, substantially as described.
4. A device of the class described comprising an upright post having parallel vertical rows of holes therein and a vertical row of figures thereon, the denomination of said figures increasing from the center of the row upwardly and downwardly.
5. Adevice of the class described comprising a member having a row of holes and a row of indicating-numerals, said numerals increasing in denomination from the center in both directions.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL BENJAMIN MATSON.
