SOFA-BED.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 5,646, dated June 27, 1848.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SHERMAN BLAIR, of the city and county of New Haven and State of .Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sofa-Beds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same.

The nature of my said invention consists in introducing under the usual seat of a sofa (or other proper article of furniture) which seat is so arranged as to be drawn forward nearly its whole width and to be supported in a horizontal position by legs attached thereto in the usual mannera movable seat of sufficient dimensions to fill the open space thus left, which may be raised to a level with the ordinary seat when thus drawn forward ;and which together with the ordinary seat forms a wide and level surface for a bed.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I proceed to describe its construction and operation.

I construct a sofa, lounge, or other convenient article of furniture in any desired form, with a seat so arranged as to be drawn forward horizontally nearly its whole width, and to be supported in a horizontal position by legs in the usual manner (or in some other convenient way) as shown by Figure 1, in the accompanying drawing. Underneath such seat, so fitted to be drawn forward when desired as aforesaid, I insert a movable seat, Fig. 2, of suflicient dimensions properly to fill the open space thus left, Fig. 1 letter A, which movable seat may be raised to the level of the ordinary seat when thus drawn forward, and being supported in such position in some convenient manner will together with such ordinary seat form a broad level surface for the bed.

This invention is especially applicable to articles of furniture the seats of which are made with spiral springs.

The movable seat may be sustained in position level with the ordinary seat when drawn out, by means of a movable cleat A Fig. 2, let into each end and attached by butts at its upper edge, the lower edge of which as the seat is raised may be thrown out by a spring and will then rest on the ledge or projection, B Fig. 1, on which the ordinary seat runs, and on which also it rests when in its usual position. It may however. be sustained in any other convenient manner.

Vhat I claim as my invention is The introduction of a movable seat under the ordinary seat of a sofa, lounge, or other proper article of furniture; so arranged as to be drawn up and sustained upon a level with the ordinary seat when drawn forward; thereby forming a broad level surface sufficient for a bed.
