FIXTURE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,277, dated July 21, 1896.

Application'filed October 25,1895.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. Gonnnns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Fixturesof which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to curtain-fixtures, and the object thereof is to provide an improved curtain pole or support which is simple in construction and operation and provided with improved means for connecting a curtain, portiere, or other article therewith.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of my improved curtain-pole; Fig. 2, a side elevation thereof 5 Fig. 3, a transverse section.

In the practice of my invention I provide a pole A, which may be composed of wood or any other preferred material, and formed in one side thereof is a longitudinalslot or opening B, which extends to the center of the pole and in cross-section occupies about one-quarter thereof, said slot being angular in form, and hinged therein is a longitudinal strip O, which is convex on its outer surface in crosssection and which is adapted to substantially fill the longitudinal slot or opening B, and connected with the upper wall of the longi tudinal slot or opening B and the upper side of the strip 0 are springs D, which are adapted to operate to hold said strip within the slot or opening B.

Formed in the side wall of the slotB oppoposite the hinges E by which said strip is held in place is an angular longitudinal slot F, and secured to the vertical inner side wall of the strip 0 is a longitudinal plate G, which projects outwardly and upwardly into the longitudinal and angular slot F.

The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawlngs.

Whenever it is desired to'secure a curtain, portire, or other article to the pole, the strip 0 is pulled down and the end of the curtain,

plate G, as shown in Fig. 3, the said curtain or other article being indicated at H, and the action of the springs D force the plate G and the end of the curtain or other article upwardly into the slot F, and thus securely hold the same in place.

It will thus be seen that I provide a simple and effective support for curtains and similar articles, by means of which the end of such articles, when suspended therefrom, is concealed, and my improvement .is neat in appearance, and may be ornamented to any de sired extent, and when a curtain or other article is connected therewith the pole or support is cylindrical in form, to all outer appearances, and the means by which the curtain or other article is suspended therefrom cannot be determined without a close inspection thereof.

My invention is not limited to the exact therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 7 In a curtain-support the combination with a pole provided with a longitudinal slot occupying about one quarter of the pole, a strip corresponding to the said slot in cross-section and secured therein, and hinges secured upon one edge of strip and attached to the pole upon one side of said slot, the spring interposed between said hinges and attached to the pole and said strip, and adapted to hold said strip within the first-mentioned slot, an oblique slot formed in said ,pole and adjacent to the first-mentioned slot, and a plate secured to one side of said strip and projecting outwardly and upwardly therefrom into said oblique slot to hold the end of the curtain or other article within said slot, substantially as described.
