DEVICE FOR CLOSING MOTH-BAGS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,224, dated July 21, 1896. Application filed June 8,1895. Serial No. 552,080. (N0 model.)

Be it known that I, GARRETT F. ROSE, a citizen of the-United States, and a resident of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Moth-Bags, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

My invention relates to a new and useful device for closing moth-bags and the like;

and its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which may be quickly and easily applied to a moth-bag to close the bag and prevent dust and bu gs from entering therein.

With these and other ends in view the invention contemplates two metallic plates suitably curved so that when placed together with the upper part of the bag between them they will remain in this position and positively close the bag against all foreign matter.

My invention consists also in means for supporting the closing device and-bag, and certain other details of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be fully explained and claimed hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a moth-bag with my device applied thereto; Fig. 2, a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the plates.

In the practice of my invention I employ a top plate A and a lower plate B. These plates are curved transversely at the top and bottom thereof, as shown at a a. and b b, respectively, so that the plates may be arranged the one on the other and pressed into place, whereby the curved parts of one platewill fit snugly against the curved parts of the other plate. That portion a b of each plate between the curved parts is also slightly curved until each plate practically assumes the shape in cross-section of a letter S.

The particular conformation of these plates is not essential, it only being desirable that the plates be substantially uniformly curved, so that they may, by a little pressure, be forced and locked together. For this purpose I have found that plates provided with a compound curve are preferable. The upper plate may be continued beyond the curve a, as shown by O, to form a handle, by means Of which the device can be manipulated.

- In using my improved device the bag D, having been previously filled or emptied, the upper part thereof is placed upon the lower plate B, and then the top plate A is arranged thereon and a sufiicient pressure applied thereto to cause the curved parts of said plate A to spring over the corresponding parts of the plate B and thus tightly clamp the bag between said plates. Suitable chains E or cords are fastened to the ends of the lower plate, by means of which the device and bag may be suspended.

As the two plates are curved exactly alike, the bag will be tightly closed between said plates, and thus all danger of dust, moths, or other bugs or insects getting inside the bag is entirely avoided. My invention is applicable to other bags and may be used in other relations which it is unnecessary to refer to here at length. Instead of pressing the two plates together, as hereinbefore described, I may construct the plates of such a shape that they can be slid one upon the other, as shown in Fig. 3.

I am aware that changes in the form and proportion of parts and details of construction of my invention may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve to myself the right and privilege of making all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination in a bag-closing device, of the character herein described, consisting of the S-shaped top plate A, of the lower plate B, each of which is curved transversely at the top and the bottom thereof, whereby the curved parts of one plate will fit snugly against the curved parts of the other plate, the upper GARRETT F.
