UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L. KENDALL, OF BROOKLYN, NEWV YORK.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,083, dated July 14, 1896.
Application filed September 26, 1895. Serial No. 563,768. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that 1, JOHN L. KENDALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a novelty in toys; and the invention resides in the novel features of construction set forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face elevation of the toy. 2 is a section along a: 00, Fig. l.
A suitable base or support 1 is shown provided with a handle 2 and with a series of channels or guides, the upper one being designated A, the lower one A and intermediate channels or troughs A A A A being pro- Four are shown in the drawings; but this number can manifestly be varied. The channels are shown arched or curved. They might be made straight or level; but as will presently appear the toy is more interesting when the channels are curved. The upper channel A has a depressed or sunken pocket B at one extremity, a hole or passage 0 being located in advance of said pocket. The intermediate channels and the bottom channel have depressed or sunken pockets B to B each of said channels having two depressed or sunken pockets, one at each extremity. The bottom channel has no hole or passage, but the intermediate channels have each a hole or passage 0 to C The hole 0 alternates or is out of line with hole 0, that is to say, the hole 0 being located near one extremity of channel A the hole 0 is located near the opposite extremity of channel A and somewhat in advance of the nearer pocket B. Similarly the holes C and so on, alternate each with a preceding hole.
A traveler, such as a ball or marble 3, being placed into the unpocketed end of channel A, the base or fiat-faced plate 1 is to be so inclined or manipulated that the traveler passes through hole 0 to channel A, thence to hole 0 and to channel A and so on, the object Fig.
7 being to bring the ball to rest in that pocket rough or retarding material 4 to the plate or support the traveler can be somewhat retarded in its journey by such friction material 4.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A toy consisting of a base or support having a series of channels located one above another and constructed with depressed pockets or receptacles at their extremities, and alternating holes or orifices between. said pockets, said holes or orifices being so arranged that the hole or orifice in one channel is out of line with the hole in the adjacent channel, substantially as described.
2. A toy consisting of a base or support having a series of channels located one above another and constructed at their extremities with depressed or'sunken pockets or receptacles, and holes or orifices intermediate said pockets, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. A toy composed of a fiat-faced plate, a series of arched troughs secured to said plate one above the other, and holes formed in the bottoms of the troughs except the lowest, said holes being so placed that the hole in each trough is not directly in line with the hole in the adjacent trough substantially as described.
4=. A toy composed of a flat-faced plate provided with friction or retarding material, a series of arched troughs secured to said plate one above the other, and holes formed in the bottoms of the troughs except the lowest, said holes being placed out of alinement with one another substantially as described.
5. A toy composed of a support, a series of In testimony whereof I have hereunto set troughs secured to the support one above the my hand in the presence of two subscribing other and closed at their ends, and holes witnesses.
formed in the bottoms of the troughs, and so JOHN L. KENDALL. 5 placed that the holes in the successive troughs -Wit-nesses:
are not in line with each other substantially WM. 0. HAUFF,
as deseribed. E. F. KASTENHUBER.
