' S. LACAV-ALERIE.
BOTTLE STOPPER.
No. 563,974. Patented July 14, 1896,
WITNESSES 1 INVENTUR Arrow/5U UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SEBASTIEN LAOAVALERIE, OF OARACAS, VENEZUELA.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,974, dated July 14, 1896.
Application filed September 19,1895. Serial No. 562,939. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SEBAST nN LACAVA- LERIE, a citizen of France, an'c a resident of Caracas, Venezuela, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to bottle-stoppers, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is pivotally connected with a bottle and arranged in such position as to be reused when desired, a further object being to provide means for securing the stopper in place on the bottle so as to close the same.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the neck of a bottle provided with 'my improvement; Fig. 2, a similar View at right angles to that of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a transverse vertical section of the neck of a bottle with the stopper removed, the stopper being also shown in section.
In the practice of my invention, I provide the neck A of a bottle with an annular shoulder B near the top thereof, and below said annular shoulder is placed an open ring or band 0.
My improved stopper D is preferably composed of wood, and is of the form in longitudinal section shown in Fig. 3, being provided with a circular head cl and being tapered to the inner end, as shown at cl, and being provided with an annular groove or recess C1 in which is placed a rubber or other flexible washer E, having a central opening or perforation, and below the washer E the stopper is provided with a head (1 by which the washer is held in place.
The stopper D is pivotally connected With the ring or band C by means of a link F, provided with ends f, which are inwardly directed and adapted to enter perforations formed in the outwardly-directed ends 0 of the ring or band C.
Pivotally connected with the ring or band C, on opposite sides thereof, is a yoke G, the ends of which are connected-with said band and the upper part of which is adapted to bear upon the top of the stopper D when the latter is in position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the upper part of said yoke being inwardly bent or curved, as shown at g, so as to give a spring action thereto, said yoke being also composed of spring-wire.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
When the stopper is placed in position to close the bottle, the washer E will be contracted and folded adjacent to the sides thereof, and thus securely close the nozzle of the bottle, and the yoke G will be pressed over the top of the stopper, said stopper being provided in the upper surfaces of the head thereof with a groove or recess K, in which the transverse portion g of the yoke is adapted to rest.
By meansof this construction I provide a simple and effective stopper, which may be used to close or seal a bottle, and which may be reused as often as desired, and which is always in position for use.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts herein described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully. described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with a bottle, the neck of which is provided with an annular exterior shoulder B near the top thereof of a stopper pivotally connected to the neck of said bottle, an open ring or band C mounted on the bottle-neck below said shoulder and connected therewith by means of a wire yoke or flange passing through an eyebolt in the stopper, said stopper consisting of a semicircular head from which the same tapers to an annular recess or groove in the opposite end, in which groove is mounted a rubber washer and a wire clamping-frame pivotally connected to said ring or band and adapted to secure the stopper within the neck of the bottle, substantially as herein described and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 27th day of August, 1895.
SEBASTIEN LACAVALERIE.
