Description
G. J. NESBITT, Jr. PUZZLE.
No. 563,792. Patented July 14, 1896.
WITNESSES- I mm/ TOH ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
CHARLES JACKSON NESBITT, JR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,792, dated July 14, 1896.
Application filed May 5, 1896.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES JACKSON Nns- BITT, J13, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding arts.
This invention relates to improvements in toys of the class designated as puzzles, and has for its object to provide a device of this nature which, while amusing and apparently simple, will require an operator to exercise considerable patience and skill in its successful manipulation.
The device is of simple construction and inexpensive in manufacture.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a sec tional face view of the device on line .r of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is an elevated sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an inverted cross-sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention there is provided a circular box A, of wood or metal, having a permanently-fixed transparent top B and having a convex bottom 0, with a slightly concaved circular area E near the center, or this area may be a level surface, if preferred. From the center of said bottom (3 is projected inwardly and vertically a spindle a, upon which is pivoted a circular box I), having a closed top and open bottom and having in the wall thereof an aperture 0, extending throughout its vertical surface, and near said aperture c a weight (Z, soldered. to the inner surface of the wall. There is also provided on the inside of box A and secured to the bottom G a circular pen or inclosure e, nearly midway between the walls of box A and pen Z). The said pen e is provided with a plurality of equidistant apertures or open spaces c. There are also provided balls a, preferably four in number, of different colors, each to be designated by the name of a leading candidate for the presidential nomination. The
Serial No. 590,331. (No model.)
object of the game or puzzle is to house the balls a in the pen I).
The pen I) being weighted by d near the aperture c, the said aperture will never remain in a position coinciding radially with any of the apertures e in the pen c when the box A is being manipulated. The center of gravity of the weight d being constantly changed by each variation of the box A from a horizontal position, the pen 1) makes a corresponding partial revolution on the spindle c1.
hen the box A is manipulated with the glass or transparent cover 13 uppermost, it will be impossible to house the balls (0' in pen I) for the reason that in order to get the said balls to the aperture 0 the box A must be tilted so as to carry them over the inclined surface of bottom C. This necessary tilting will cause the weight (Z to partly revolve pen b and so carry the aperture 0 to a point opposite the side of the box tilted.
The operator will, by experiment, learn that the pen is to invert the box A, so that there will be a level surface and no obstructions between the sides of the box A and the opening to pen I), the walls of pen e not projecting more than half-way between the bottom O and top B. Eventhen the puzzle will require considerable patience in its successful manipulation, as the weight cl will still cause the pen I; to have a circular movement on the spindle a, but such tendency will be largely impeded by the top surface of pen 1) resting on the inner surface of top 13 when the box is manipulated in an inverted position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. A puzzle comprising a box with transparent top, having an interior circular apertured pen, and a spindle projected vertically from the bottom of said box upon which is journaled an inner circular box or pen with closed top and open bottom with a lateral aperture and laterally weighted; and balls adapted to be housed within said inner pen or box by the manipulation of the device as a whole in an inverted position, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a puzzle, the combination of a circular box with convex bottom and transparent top,
the only feasible way to house the balls a in having Within the same an apertured pen and centrally Within said pen a circular box piv otcd upon a spindle vertically projected from the bottom, said inner box having a single lateral aperture; and one or more balls adapted to be housed Within said inner pen or boX by manipulation of the device in an inverted position, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination in a puzzle of a box A, with transparent top 13 and convex bottom 0, and a pen e with apertures e, and an inner pen or box Z), mounted upon vertical spindle a, the said box Z), having an aperture 0 and
