W. M. SINGER.
SAW HANDLE.
No. 563,512. I Patented July 7, "1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM M. SINGER, OF SUNBURY, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAW-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,512, dated July 7, 1896.
Application filed. April 16, 1896.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. SINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sunbury, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to attachments for saw-handles, by means of which the handle may be quickly connected to the blade of the saw or disconnected therefrom without the necessity of inserting or removing screws or rivets, This attachment may be easily applied to the ordinary handle used on handsaws without materially changing its construction.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of my specification, Figure 1 is a side view of a handsaw provided with my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly in section, and showing the saw-blade released. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a plate provided with guides for the clampinghook and a stop for the butt of the saw, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the hook for clamping the saw in the handle.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the handle of a handsaw, which may be of the ordinary construction. This handle is provided with the usual kerf 2 for the reception of the butt of the saw-blade 3. A pin or bolt 4 extends transversely through the handle in the lower part of the kerf. The end of the saw-blade is constructed with an inwardly and upwardly extending recess 5, which is adapted to fit over the bolt 4. The upper corner of the saw-blade is also cut away, as shown, so as to form a shoulder 6, and the back of the blade is provided with a rearwardly-inclined notch 7 at a point a short distance in front of the handle.
A metal plate 8, having depending lugs 9 and a transverse abutment 10, is adapted to fit on the back of the saw-handle, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and is secured to the handle by screws 11 passing through suitable holes. A stop-piece 12 is attached to the under side of the plate and extends downward into the kerf in the saw-handle. On the upper side Serial No. 587,804. (No model.)
of the plate at the forward end is a guide 13,
in which slides a clamping rod 15. The rear end of the rod is guided in a perforation in the abutment 10. The clamping-rod 15 is screw-threaded at its rear end and provided with a nut 16, and the other end of the rod is provided with a hook 17, adapted to engage the notch 7 on the back of the saw-blade. The hook is somewhat wider than the sawblade and is provided with flanges 18, which extend downward on either side of the blade to prevent thehook from slipping off the blade.
When it is desired to insert and secure the blade within the han dle,the nut 16 is loosened and the clamping-rod 15 pushed forward, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The sawblade is then inserted in the kerf and by tilting the blade slightly downward the bolt 4 will pass into the recess 5. The blade is then brought to its normal position, when the shoulder 6 will rest against the stop-piece 12. The hook 17 is then drawn into the notch 7 by tightening the nut 16 upon the clamping-rod. The blade will thus be held between the supporting-pin 4:, stop-piece 12, and the hook 17. To remove the blade, it is merely necessary to loosen the nut and tip the blade forward, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a saw-blade having a recess 5 in the end and notch 7 in the back thereof, of a saw-handle provided in its lower
