Be it known that I, FRANK V. NOYES, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Billiard-Chalk Holders, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention has for its object the production of a simple, cheap, and efficient holder for billiard-cue chalk blocks in common use, whereby the chalk is protected from breakage, the dust reduced to a minimum, and the hands and clothing of the players protected from the disagreeable marking due to handling and contact with the chalk.

It is well known that the chalk used in connection with billiard-tables is very wastefully used, the chalk blocks being frequently broken by a fall from the table-rail, and crushed by the feet of the players. In ordinary usage the chalk soon chips or cracks off, and thus becomes worthless long before it is used up. Not only this, but the exposed chalk soils the hands and clothing of the players in a most disagreeable manner. By my invention, however, I am enabled to do away with all of these objectionable features and produce a great saving in the use of the chalk itself.

As billiard-chalks are usually made as cubes, I make the interior of the holder of corresponding form, said holder being, preferably, molded elastic india-rubber, having four flat sideso rising substantially at right angles from an externally-convexed base b. At the corners I prefer to enlarge the material to form ribs or beads a', extending outward diagonally from the sides, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 3. The base b is made quite thick, as shown in Fig. 2, and I preferably form therein a substantially hemispherical depression b', leaving a fiat shoulder -or support b2 for the support of the inner end of the chalk block c. The sides a have sufcient elasticity to be stretched to admit the chalk block, and to hold it firmly in place when released.

It will be evident from an inspection of Fig. l that the chalk is fully protected by the holder, so that the hands and clothing, or other objects, cannot be soiled, the open top of the holder affording free access for the tip of the cue to be chalked.

The beads ct form cushions when the holder restsl on its side, so that should the same be stepped on the chalk cannot be broken, even by a very heavy person. Should the chalk block be cracked in any manner, however, the elasticity of the holder retains the parts in shape.

The recess b in the base forms a pneumatic cushion, so that the chalk cannot be broken by endwise pressure, and the exterior convexity of the base also tends to cause the holder to normally rest on one side in convenient position to be grasped for use.

l. A chalk-holder having elastic side Walls to retain the chalk block between them, and a closed base having a pneumatic cushion therein, substantially as described.

2. A chalk-holder having elastic side walls, a base therefor having a flat supportingshoulder for the bottom of the chalk, and a cup-like depression in the base, to form a pneumatic cushion when the chalk is inserted in the holder, substantially as described.

3. A chalk-holder having elastic side walls to retain the chalk block between them, a closed base having a pneumatic cushion therein, and longitudinal cushions at and extended from the corners of the side walls, substantially as described.
