Description

1. COOPER.
v r Chum. No. 56,340. Patented July 10, 1866.
N. PET
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN COOPER, OF DUBLIN, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,340, dated July 10, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN COOPER, of Dublin, Wayne county, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chorus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, made part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an isometrical projection of my improved churn, a part of the box being represented as broken away to show the internal construction; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section, showing the mode of arranging the beatersin the box. 5
A is the box, the size of which is dependent upon the amount of work required to be perormed. The bottom of this box is curved, forming the are of a circle the radius of which is longer than that of the circle described by the beaters by, say, one-fourth or one-third.
B is a crank-handle attached to the spur- Wheel 0, which is geared into the pinion D, multiplying motion as may be desired.
The pinion D is keyed to the end of the shaft E, which passes through the side of the churn with suitable boxes. The other end of the shaft is attached to the opposite side of the churn in any suitable manner, so as to turn freely on its bearings. To this shaft are attached the beaters F F, which are bent bows of wood, shaped as shown in the drawings. These bows I dispose spirally on the shaft, those on one side being placed opposite to the spaces between those on the opposite side. This shape and disposition of the heaters is not essential, though I regard it as the best.
The bent exterior ends of the heaters are intended to facilitate the freeing of the particles of butter that adhere to the heaters. I have found that this adhesion seriously impairs the proper working of straight spikeformed beaters, and have therefore adopted the bow-formed beaters shown, or single ones curved at the point, which to some extent will act in the same manner.
The shaft E is not placed in the middle of the box, but set to one side, so as just to clear the curved bottom on that side and leave a space on the other, in which the particles of butter are accumulated and gradually formed into a roll, which will be turned with every revolution of the shaft, until finally, when the work is completed by the perfect separation of the butter from the milk, it will be found to have been fully collected in this well-worked roll at one side, and it is only necessary to draw off the milk, leaving the butter in a single mass.
Having fully described my improvements, what I claim as my invention, and seek to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The bowed or bent beaters F, when constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
