SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,151, dated June 30, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. FOBES, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to an improved toy; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings,'Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of my toy. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the body portion of the form of toy seen in Fig. 1, the legs being removed and the head and rider broken away. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the fore legs of my toy. Fig. 4 is a modified form of the toy shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a plan of a hook used on the hind feet of my toy. Fig. 6 is a side elevation illustrating the movements of the toy. The position of the parts corresponding to the position shown in Fig. 1 is shown in dotted lines.

Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 1 is the body portion. It may be made to represent a horse and rider, monkey, or any other animal and is stamped or cut from cardboard or sheet metal. At the hip-joint is a rectangular notch 2, at the two inner corners of which are the circular openings 3 and 4, connecting with said notch. At the shoulder-joint is a rectangular notch 5, at the two inner corners of which are the circular openings 6 and 7, connecting with said notch. Attached to said body portion 1 by an elastic band or cord 8 are the fore legs 9 and the hind legs 10. In the upper ends of the said

side of the band is passed into the circular recess 3 or 6 and the other side of the band into the corresponding oppositely-located recess 4 or 7. Then the band is released and the tension draws the legs into position relative to the body portion 1 as shown in Figs. 1, 4, and 6.

The feet are connected by the wires 13 and 5 5 14. The wire 13 is V-shaped between the feet with the 'point extending backward. The sharpened points 15 and 16 are passed through the feet of the toy and then bent downward into position, as shown in Figs. 1, 6o 4, and 6. The wire 14 is similar to the wire 13, but the V-point extends forward. It is shown in plan in Fig. 5. The sharpened points 17 and 18 are passed through the hind feet and then bent down into position.

A cord 19 is tied to the apex of the wire 14, is passed forward through the apex of the wire 13, and then backward between the hind legs of the toy, as shown in Figs. 1, 4, and 6. The normal position of the shoulder and hip joints is shown in Figs. 1 and 4. When the cord 19 is pulled, the points 15 and 16 of the wire 13 engage with the floor or table and prevent the toy from beingpulled backward. The result is that the hind legs are drawn for- 7 5 ward, as shown in Fig. 6, and the elastics in the hip and shoulder joints are stretched. As soon as the cord is released the points 17 and 18 of the hook 14 engage with the floor, carpet, or table. The contraction of the elas- 8o tics causes the legs to assume their natural position, throws the fore legs forward, as shown in Fig. 6, and, as the operation is repeated, the toy continues to advance forward and away from the operator. I claim- 1. In a toy, a body of sheet material repc resenting a four-footed animal, said body having the rectangular notches 2 and 5 at its hips and shoulders, respectively, and having the circular openings 3 and 4 at opposite corners of said notch 2 and the circular openings 6 and 5 7 at opposite corners of said notch 5, in combination with the pair of legs 10, said legs havin g the

11 and 12, the wire 14 connecting the feet of said legs 10, said wires having the sharpened downwardly-projecting points 17 and 18, the pair of legs 9 similar to the legs 10 and positioned with the elastic 8 in the circular openings 6 and '7, the wire 14 connecting the feet of said legs 9, said wires having the sharpened ends 15 and 16 and the cord 19 attached to said wire 14 and extending around the wire 13 and backwardly, substantially as herein specified.

2. In a toy, a body of sheet material representing a four-footed animal, said body having the rectangular notches 2 and at its hips and shoulders, respectively, and having the circular openings 3 and 4 at opposite corners of said notch 2 and the circular openings 6 and 7 at opposite corners of said notch 5, in combination with the pair of legs 10, said legs having the

11 and 12 in opposite sides of their upper ends, the elastic 8 encircling said legs 10, said wires having the sharpened downwardly-projecting points 17 and 18, the pair of legs 9 similar to the legs 10 and positioned with the elastic S in the circular openings 6 and 7, the wire 14 connecting the feet of said legs 9, said wires having the sharpened ends 15 and 16, the cord 19 attached to said wire 14 and extending around the wire 13 and backwardly and the pieces 20 and 21 attached to said feet, substantially as herein specified.
