STOPPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,132, dated June 30, 1896.

Application filed March 5 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDwARn LEWIS BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of San Francisco, in the State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in Stoppers and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure l is a side elevation of my stopper in position in a bottle. Fig. 2 is a view showing the device in its normal position on a table and indicating in dotted lines the stopper on its side. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the device, and Fig. 4 is a similar view of a modiiication.

The body A of the stoppermay be of cork, wood, rubber, or other material suitable for that purpose. Around the outer or butt end of the bodyI secure a metallic ring B, having a portion of its external surface threaded, as shown, and a metallic cap C is secured to said ring by means of said threads, as will be readily understood. The outer sides of said cap converge toward its outer or butt end and the said end of the cap is weighted, as shown at D, either by being made solid and thick, as illustrated in Fig. 3, or being provided internally with a heavy disk, as shown in Fig. 4. The cap and ring also may be made integral, as illustrated in Fig. 4, but I prefer the screw-threaded construction, as it facilitates cleaning and polishing of the cap.

It will be seen at once that my invention Serial No. 581,944. (No model.)

provides the stopper with an ornamentalcap, so that it presents a neat and ornamental appearance when in the bottle. When removed from the bottle and placed on a table or other plane surface, the Weighted cap at once overbalances the body of the stopper and causes it to assume an upright position and rest on the flat butt end of the cap, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The stopper is thus prevented from rolling from the table and being lost, and, likewise, it is prevented from soiling papers or other articles on the table by coming into contact therewith.

The stopper will always be in a position to be easily grasped by the fingers for insertion into the bottle.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Ihe new article herein described and shown constituting a bottle-stopper and consisting of a body of cork or other light-weight material and a cap of heavier material fitted on and over the butt end of the body and having its sides tapered or converging toward its head or end and having said end flat and heavily weighted whereby when the stopper is placed on a table it will automatically assume a vertical position and rest on the iiat weighted end of the cap.
