Description

(N M d1.) I I 0 e G. G. BENNETT & J. H. MOWERS.
SPRING CLAMP FOR SECURING BRACES TO WIRE, FENCES.
No. 562,947. Patented June 30, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GARFIELD G. BENNETT AND JOHN H. MOWERS, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
SPRING-CLAMP FOR SECURING BRACES T0 WIRE FENCES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 562,947, dated June 30, 1896.
Application filed January 23, 1896. Serial No. 576,550. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, GARFIELD G. BENNETT and JOHN H. MOWERS, citizens of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring- Clamps to Secure Braces to W'ire Fences; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in springcatches to hold brace-wires on wire fences; and the objects of our invention are, first, to provide a means whereby the bracewires can be clamped rigid to the strands of wire at their intersection with the bracewires; second, to make a cheap, durable, and efiicient means for the purpose stated.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a section of wire fence, showing our spring-clamp in position. Fig. 2 is a front view of a portion of one of the strands and also portion of one of the vertical brace-wires, also showing one of our improved spring-clamps in position. This view is full size used on wire fence. Fig. 3 is a transverse view of same, showing more fully the construction of the spring-clamp. Fig. 4 represents a view taken from the opposite side of the fence-wire to more clearly show with the U-shaped end B. The end Eof the said lever isbent inwardly at right angles with the said lever and formed into a U -shaped loop F to engage the back of the brace-wire G.
The vertical brace-wire is placed in the rear of the strands of the wire forming the horizontal bars. The U -shaped loop formed upon the end of the spring-leverA is hooked under the back of the brace-wire G, the hook C passing over the face of the strand H and pressed on a line with the brace-wire G, the U-shaped hook F engaging the back of the brace-wire G, which clamps the strand of the wire fence rigid to the brace-wire, holding the strands H parallel apart.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a fence consisting of the horizontal fence-wires and the vertical crossing wires and the fence-posts, the vertical wires having their ends engaging the upper and lower horizontal wires, of a springclamp made from a single piece of wire to secure the brace or tie wire to the horizontal wires where it crosses, consisting of the loop to receive the tie-wire and the short and long terminals bent to receive the horizontal wire and clamp it tightly against the tie-wire, the said long terminal being formed with the spring-arm having the hook at its end to engage the tie-wire at a distance from the horizontal wire to which it is attached; whereby the wires are clamped and held tightly together.
In testimony whereof we affix our signa tures in presence of two witnesses.
