DAVID CARSWELL, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
FENCE-POST CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 27, 1911.
Application filed February 25, 1911. Serial No. 610,773.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, DAVID CARswnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Post Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a clamp formed from a single piece of wire which, in combination with a bolt and nut, is adapted to form an absolutely secure support for a line of fence wire by which said wire will be held immovable on a post, and which clamp by reason of its simplicity of construction and the ease and speed with which it and the wire can be attached to a post reduces the cost of building a line of fence to a minimum.
I accomplish my object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 illustrates a tubular post, broken away, showing a clamp in side elevation thereon with a line of fence wire held in rigid position against the post, a lower clamp shown in open position engaging a line of wire as it is being placed on the post before the ends of the clamp have been brought together; Fig. 2 is a top elevation of the clamp with a bolt inserted and a nut screwed on the threaded end thereof holding the ends of the clamp thereon spaced from each other, and Fig. 3 is a detail of the clamp in open position showing the loop ends with which the bolt engages.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
A represents any suitable post, preferably of cement or metal, that shown being tubular metal.
B B represent a line of wire fencing, broken away, and G is a single piece of heavy pliable wire its ends twisted back upon itself the points of reversal forming loops D D, the two tip ends of the wire being again reversed to positions slightly inward and upward forming hooks E E. As the clamp is being attached to a post the fence wire B is caught in these hooks, as shown in the lower open clamp in Fig. 1. Its loops D D are then pressed together drawing the clamp around the post; bolt H is inserted through said loops D D and a nut h screwed up on the threaded end of the bolt until the tension of the clamp is such that the clamp is immovable upon the post. The tightening of the clamp simultaneously draws the ends of hooks E E against or in such close proximity with post A that the line of fencing wire seated in the hooks is not only bedded in the hooks but is also drawn rigid against the post thus rendering it immovable. A plurality of posts and wires thus form a string of fencing that will stand. firm under the greatest pressure the posts supporting the clamps while the lines of wire bedded in the hooks of each clamp and held rigid against the posts will assist in holding the posts firmly erect and in line with each other.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a fence post and a fence wire, of a clamp comprising a single piece of heavy pliable wire its ends reversed forming loops twisted on said pliable wire toward its center the tip ends turned slightly upward and inward forming hooks to carry said fence wire, a bolt with threaded end to engage with said loops and a nut to engage with the threaded end of said bolt and look said clamp immovably on the post and simultaneously hold said fence wire bedded in said hooks and firmly against said post.
2. A fence post clamp comprising a single heavy pliable wire the ends thereof looped and twisted backward to its center, the tip ends bent slightly upward and inward forming hooks to seat the fence wire and means to grip the loop ends together for clamping a support and simultaneously holding the wire rigid in said tip ends and against the support.
3. The combination with a support and a line of fence wire, of a single heavy pliable wire comprising a central body section, duplicate loops formed by a reversal of direction of the ends thereof, duplicate hooks formed by the tips of said ends and adapted to seat said wire, and a bolt and nut with which to engage said loops and lock the clamp and fence wire immovably on the support.
4. The combination with a plurality of fence posts and fence wires, of a plurality against the posts when the devices are of clamps each composed of a single pliable wire the ends thereof forming loops, a bolt and nut connecting said loops, said ends encircling the body part of said pliable wire the tips of said ends forming hooks spaced apart at the central part of the wire and adapted to seat the fence wires innnovably clamped. 10 In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
