UNITED STATES PATENT EEicE.
FRANK A. HERRICK, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN.
CURTAIN PQLE AND FlXTURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IPatent No. 562,726, dated June 23, 1896.
Application filed January 16,1896. Serial No. 575,675x (N0 model-l To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. HERRICK, of Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Curtain Poles and Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to curtain poles and attachments; and the objectof my improvements is to provide a curtain attachment that may be cheaply made, by which the curtain may be easily and firmly secured, and to so combine said attachment with the curtain-- pole that said attachment may be'readily adj ustcd to any desired position, that it may be clamped to secure the curtain, without any portion of said pole interfering with the easy working of said attachment, and so that most of said attachment shall be concealed by said pole. I attain this object in the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an end view of a curtain pole and attachment embodying my invention, the curtain-pole being shown in cross-section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the curtain attachment. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the upper bowed portion of said attachment. Fig. at is a side elevation of one, and Fig. 6 of the other, of the curtain-retaining jaws; and Fig. 5 is an elevation of one of said jaws, looking at the edge.
Similar letters indicate similar parts in all the views.
A A indicates the curtain-pole. Said pole is made of wood and is hollowed out longitudinall y, as shown in Fig. l, to form the slot ll, into which the bowed portion 0 G G of the curtain attachment passes without touching the sides, and also to form the slot I. The portion of the pole A A which is at the bottom of the slot I forms ways 2' -i, upon which the rollers J J of the curtain attach- The slot I-I opens through along the center at the bottom of the pole to form a passageway for the narrow portion of the curtain attachment.
K is a slot joining the slots H and I.
B is the curtain attachment. Said attachment consists of the upper bowed portion (.7, made of sheet metal, perhaps five-eighths of an inch wide, bent in the direction of the thickness of the metal to form the downouter edges.
centers.
wardly-projecting converging legs G G and the upwardly-projectin g central lug L. The
lower ends of the legs G G are fastened together and held at a little distance from each other by rivets or lugs extending from their The lower ends of the legs G G and the rivets or lugs which fasten them together form a guide for the clamping-jaws E E. A rod \l passes through the lug L at its top and is secured thereto. Rollers J J are pivoted upon the rod M at opposite sides of the lug L. Through the legs G G are formed slots D D, which extend longitudinally along said legs. The jaws E E cross each other and are secured together by a hinge d at their Said jaws are cut in at their edges near their upper ends, leaving a neck F, and forming the upper ends into heads 6 e.
The curtain attachment is put together by passing the heads 6 6, turned sidewise, through the slots D D, and turning the necks F E into said slots, the jaws being thus turned so that their fiat sides are parallel with the flat sides of thelegs G G. The necks F F are bent so as to extend through the slots D D, and support the heads e 6 upon the op posite sides of the legs G G to that upon which the jaws E E lie. The bowed portion of the curtain attachment forms an enlargement which passes into the slot H. The lug L extends through the slot K, and the rollers J J pass into the slot I and rest upon the ways i 'i, so as to hold the curtain attachment out of contactwith the pole except through said rollers, as shown in Fig. 1. The curtain is secured by placing its upper edge between the lower ends of the jaws E E and then drawing said jaws downward. As the jaws descend the necks F F slide downward in the slots D D, the converging legs G G forcing the upper and lower ends of said jaws together, thus clasping and retaining the curtain in place.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A curtain-pole, A, A, provided with the communicating slots, H, I, the slot, ll, opening at the surface of said pole and the pole at the bottom of the slot, 1, forming a way, '2', said pole being combined with acurtain attachment, B, having the converging legs, G,
G, adapted to pass into the slot, H, said curtain attachment also having a roller, J, adapted to travel upon the way, 11, and support said attachment, substantially as, and for the purpose described.
2. A curtain attachment, B, made principally of sheet metal, said metal being bent in the direction of its thickness to form the con verging legs, G, G, said legs being provided with slots, D, D, said curtain attachment be ing provided with jaws pivoted together toward their centers, said jaws being cut away at their edges near their ends to form the necks, F, F, and heads, 6, c, said necks being bent to extend through the slots, D, D, substantially as shownand for the purpose described.
3. A curtain attachment, l3, bent to form the converging legs, G, G, said legs being united and held a distance apart at their ends, said curtain attachment being provided with clamping-j aws passing between the ends of said legs, and between the attachments that unite said ends, and being restrained in their motion by said attachments, and said legs, substantially as shown and described.
4. A curtain attachment, l3, bent to form the converging legs G, G, said legs being united at their lower ends by an attachment, said curtain attachment being provided with clamping-jaws, E, E, adapted to be operated by the converging legs, G, G, the lower ends of said legs and the attachment uniting said ends acting as a guide to restrain the motion of said jaws, substantially as shown and described.
