J. H. WELOH'.
SQUARE.
Patented June 23, 1896.
INVENTUR By W ATTURNEYJ' java/4L,
UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
JUSTIN HOOD WELCH, OF TOPSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
SQUARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,683, dated June 23, 1896.
Application filed February '7, 1896. Serial No. 578,336. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
be it known that I, JUSTIN IIOOD IVELOH,
' a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Topsfield, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Squares, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to carpenters squares; and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class, the separate arms of which are detachably connected in order that they may be conveniently separated, in a much smaller space than previously possible; and with this and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully'disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a side view of asquare made according to my invention; Fig. 2, asectional view of a detail; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 2) of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows in dotted lines a modified form of construction, and Fig. 5 an edge view thereof.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a square consisting of the arms A and B, which in practice are provided with the usual scales, and one of said arms, preferably the larger and longer arm A, is provided at one end with a mortise a, which passes therethrough, and the other arm is provided with a corresponding tenon Z), which is adapted to be inserted thereinto.
The mortise a and the tenon b may be of the same size throughout, as shown in Figs. Hi and 5, but I prefer to make them as shown in Fig. 9, in which the mortise is provided with an angular oifset at (0 and the tenon with a similar projection 12 which extends therethrough, and formed in. the inner side wall of the mortise a and in the adjacent side of the extension b of the tenon is a bore or cavity D, into which is passeda screw or screw-threaded bolt G, which is cut away longitudinally at one side, as shown at g, in such manner that one side thereof is flat, and when the screw-threaded portion is turned so as to be in contact with the tenon b, or the extension b thereof, the separate arms A and B will be securely held together, and when the screw or bolt G is turned so that the flat portion thereof will be adjacent to the tenon, or to the extension 72 thereof, said parts may be easily separated, as will be readily understood.
In Fig. 4 I have shown by means of clotted lines a construction in which the sides of the tenon b are practically straight therethrough, and the mortise a is similar in form, but I prefer to slightly incline the outer edge of the mortise and also to similarly incline the corresponding side or edge of the tenon, and in this form of construction the bore or cavity B and the screw G are employed in the same manner as hereinbefore described.
It will thus be seen that I provide a simple and effective device for detachably connecting the arms A and B of the square, and one which is well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, while it does not materially add to the cost of the material.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A square composed of two detachably-connected arms, substantially as herein shown and described, in the end of one of which is formed a mortise having an angular shoulder formed therein, and a bore communicating with the top of said shoulder, and one end of the other arm of the square having a tenon formed thereon corresponding with the mortise in the first-mentioned arm, said tenon. also having a bore therein and a screw provided with a longitudinal flattened portion adapted to enter said bore, and to lock said parts together and to release the same when turned to the proper position, all constructed, arranged and operating as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the forcgoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 3d day of February, 1896.
JUSTIN HOOD IVELOII.
