SAND-GUARD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 562,115, dated June 16, 1896.

T0 to whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALONZO BOOTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sigurd, in the county of Sevier and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand-Guards; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such'as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to sand-gua rds for vehicle-wheels and particularly to that class of sand-guards which are capable of being readily detached from the axle to which they are secured.

The object of my invention is to provide a sand-guard which shall be easily attached to or detached from the'axle of a vehicle; which shall be capable of being firmly secured to axles of somewhat varying size, and which at the same time shall be proof against the passage to the axle-joint of sand, dust or mud which may be thrown thereon by the revolution of the wheel.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the device from the inward side of the wheel, showing the axle in cross-section and the wheel in part. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device detached from the axle, the parts of the device being separated from each other.

In the drawings, A represents the axle, around the shoulder of which is secured my improved sand-guard, which .is constructed in two sections B and O. The said sections are alike in general appearance and construction, the several parts of each being made integral and preferably of the same material. Each section comprises a band or collar a, which is considerably enlarged in that part thereof which surmounts the axle, to form a webbing b, the upper portion of which is turned outwardly to form a flange c.

The edges or surfaces 01 of the sections B a and C, which come in contact when they are in position upon the axle, are grooved to form an intermatching joint.

The sections B and O are separably fastened together at the top by a hinged joint e, each section at this point being extended sufficiently to form in the one an eye 6 and in the other a hook e to engage the eye.

On the under side each section is provided with a lug f, through which passes a screw or boltv g of sufficient length so that the lugs may be thereby drawn together and firmly clamp the device upon the axle.

By the arrangement of the parts of such a sand-guard as the one I have described, the guard may be easily detached from or attached to the axle by the manipulation of the screw or bolt g, which, as soon as removed, allows the parts B and O to be separated.

The hinge-joint which I have described is simple in construction, and is in no way in danger of becoming clogged and inoperative by dirt or other refuse which may enter its bearings, and with the intermatehing grooves shown at d render the joint proof against the passage of any material amount of grit.

As already stated, the webbing and flanges of the two sections B and C are preferably made so that when in use they will surmount and only partially surround the hub. They may, however, extend all the Way around, and be provided with intermatching grooves at their lower extremities corresponding to those which are situated at their upper ends.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a sand-guard for vehicle-wheels the combination of two separably-hinged members, a hook and eye joining said members, means for clamping the latter together, said members having intermatching grooves where they join and each of said members having a band or collar, a webbing constituting an enlargement of said band or collar and a flange extending outwardly around the periphery of said webbing substantially as described.
