MATCH REGEP'I'ACLE.
No. 561,961. Patente-d June 16, 1896.

VILLIAM CECIL BOWER, OF BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.
MATcH-RECEPTACLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,961,l dated June 16, 1896.
Application filed October Il, 1895. Serial N0. 565,379. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, WILLIAM CEcIL BoWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Receptacles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in match-safes, and especially to the class of igniting-boxes by which, as amatch is drawn from the box, the head of the match is ignited, the head end of the match being the last to be withdrawn from the receptacle.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a base portion, upon which a box of any desirable shape rests, and is secured to the said base by hinges or other suitable fastening devices. The upper side of said box is provided with a series of bars which are corrugated on their sides and between which corrugations the match-head is forced to cause the igniting thereof.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I clearly illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view through the box, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the corrugated top.
Reference now being vhad to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a base for the box, which is made of any suitable material, andB is a box or receptacle for holding the matches, and is hinged to the Fsaid base portion by the hinges C and is fastened to the base at the opposite end by means of a catch D. The upper portion of the box is provided with a series of bars E, each bar having on opposite edges oorrugations G, and the said bars are a short distance apart, so as to allow a match to Abe drawn between.
When it is desired to fill the box, it is turned back on its hinge, the matches placed in the receptacle, with the heads down and the buttends extending up between the corrugations. Vhen it is desired to withdraw a match, the
match is taken hold of by its butt-end and drawn through between the corrugations, -and the head of the match, rasping against the edges of the bars, is ignited.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a match-box consisting of the pedestal A having beveled edges, combined with the receptacle B hinged near the top of one of the said beveled edges, a catch D, and a series of bars, having corrugated edges, and secured across the open top of the receptacle and in the same horizontal plane, whereby matches, which are adapted to be held between said corrugations, may be ignited as they are withdrawn substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
b WILLIAM oEorL BowER.
