SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 630,903, dated August 15, 1899.

Be it known that 1, PETER CHRISTIAN LEI- DIOH, a resident of Tamaqua, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pen nsylvania,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes or Grates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in boxes or crates, and more particularly to such as are adapted for the reception of bottles, the object of the invention being to so construct a box that bottles will be securely held from displacement and so that the slats which hold the bottles in place can be readily removed to permit of a thorough cleaning of the box.

A further objectis to provide a crate that shall be simple in construction, cheap to man ufacture, easy to assemble and take apart, and one that will be very effectual when in use.

With these objects in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan View. Fig. 2 is a view in section. Fig. 3 is a plan view, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view illustrating a slight modification.

A represents a box, and B B a series of slats disposed therein. The box A is composed of the sides 1 1, ends 2 2, and bottom 3. The ends 1 l are provided with slots or handholds 4t 4 to facilitate the carrying of the box. The bottom 8 is provided with a slot or opening 5 to permit the escape of the drippings from the bottles. A groove 4 is provided in the inner face of one end of the box, in which is secured a series of plugs 6, spaced apart to form a series of curved recesses 7 between them to receive the curved ends of the slats B. The other end of the box is provided on its inner face with a series of gradually-taperin g cut-away portions 8, beginning near the top of the box and inclining gradually down to a recess 9 in alinement with the recess 7 in the other end of the box. The recesses 9 are preferably formed in the same manner as recesses 7-viz., by first making a groove in the end of the box and then inserting plugs iii said groove, spaced apart to form the recesses.

Each slat B is provided at the end that passes through the cut-away portions'S with a longitudinal slot 11, open at the end of the slatto receive a spring-catch 12, made, preferably, of spring-wire, secured at its lower end to the box and normally swung away from the box at its upper end. The upper end of the latch is bent outwardly from the end of the box and then back toward the end of the box,thus forming an extended inclined tongue 13 and a shoulder 14 to engage the slat as the same is pushed downward up'on the latch, the latch passing upward throughthe slot until the slat is pushed down far enough to free the tongue of the latch, when the latter will be released and cause the shoulder to become disposed over the top of the slat and securely hold same against upward movement.

Grooves or recesses 15 15 are provided at diametrically opposite points in the sides 1 l of the box and are adapted to receive a partition or brace 16, which is provided on its upper edge with a series of raised port-ions 17 to receive between them the slat-s 13.

Instead of the form of slat described I might employ such a slat as is shown in Figs. 3 and 4. In this form of my invention the ends of the slats are straight, and hence the recesses in the box to receive same will be straight. I employ the same locking device with this slat, and in all other respects the invention when used with this form of slat would be like that hereinbefore described.

It will be seen from the above description that my device is extremely simple in construction, that the parts can be quickly assembled and removed, and hence it will be a most convenient construction for cleaning and scouring.

It is evident that numerous slight changes might be resorted to in the general form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv 1. As an article of manufacture, a crate having curved recesses in one end thereof, slats provided with curved ends to fit in said recesses, the other end'of the crate having cut-away portions and latches adapted to secure the ends of the slats in place, substan* tially as set forth.

2. As an article of manufacture, a crate having internal transverse grooves in parallel Walls, blocks secured in said grooves and spaced apart whereby to form recesses, and slats disposed at their ends in said recesses, substantially as set forth.

3. As an article of manufacture, a crate having curved recesses in one end thereof, slats provided with curved ends to fit in said recesses, the other end of the crate having curved inclined cut-away portions, the other curved ends of the slats adapted to fit in said cut-away portions, and a spring-latchadapt" ed to pass through a slot in the end'of the slat and secure the slats in place.

4. As an article of manufacture, a box or crate having curved recesses in inner walls thereof, one of said inner Walls having an in open slot,said latch having an inclined tongue at its free end and a shoulder at the base of said tongue, substantially as set forth.
