THOMAS R.. JORDAN, OF NFV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO JAMES C. SHANNON, OF SAME PLACE.
SAFETY-ENVELO P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,894, dated June 9, 1896.
Application led October l2, 1895. Serial Noi 565,524- (No model.)
To @ZZ wwm, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, THOMAS R. JORDAN, a subject of the Queen of England, and a resident of New York, in the ccuntyof New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Envclops, of which the following' is a speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forniin a part thereof, in which m similar letters of reference indicate correspon ding parts.
My invention relates to improvements in safety-envelope, and the object thereof is to provide an envelop or cover from which the contents cannot be extracted Without leaving distinct evidence upon the envelop or cover that the saine has been tampered with.
lilith this and other objects in view I construct my improved envelop or cover as de 2o scribed in the following specification and illustratec'l in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a blank from which my improved envelop is formed. Fig. 2 shows the same folded. Fig. 3 is a modiiication of the blank shown in Fig. l. Fig. i is a sectional vieiv of the saine. Fig. 5 shows the contents secured Within the envelop and the blank open 5 and Fig. G illustrates the inode of inserting 3o the contents Within the envelop, the same being sealed.
In the practice of my invention l provide a blank, as shown in Fig. l, consisting of the main or body portion B, provided Withlateral extensions or side flaps O, which are guinmed upon the outer edges thereof, and the end extensions or flaps- D E.
At the intersection of the extension or flap E and the main or body portion B is formed a transverse opening F, and at the intersection of the lower extension D and said body portion is secured a tongue or strip G, provided on the lower portions thereof with slits or incisions g, as shown in Fig. l, and said tongue is adapted to pass through said opening F upon the outside of the envelop.
informing the envelop or cover the end flap E is first folded inwardly upon the inain or body portion 13. The side iiaps C are then 5o folded upon the flap E and secured in position by means of the glue or other adhesive substance upon the outeredgesthereof, after which the flap D is folded inwardly upon said flap C and secured thereto by means of the glue or adhesive substance upon the outer 5 5 edges thereof, thereby forming the envelop or cover, as shown in Fig. i).
The letter or matter to be sent in the envelop is then provided with a slit or incision, into which is inserted the end of the tongue 6o G, and the letter is then rolled about said tongue sufficiently to pass through the opening F into the envelop, and the incision in the latter engages the slit g upon the edges of the'tongue G and secures saidletterwithin 65 the envelop.
Figs. 3 and d illustrate a modification of my improved envelop, relating particularly to the opening in the extension D2, and this extension is here shown provided ivith a re- 7o ceding inouth having a transverse slit f' to receive the tongue and through which the contents of the envelop is adapted to be inserted. The construction Vis similar to that shown in Fig. l. By securing the letter or other article to the tongue or strip Within the envelop any effort to Withdraw the same from the envelop will at once detach the tongue or strip from the envelop and clearly show that the same has been tampered with.
Various changes and alterations may be ina-de in the construction of the several parts Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
The niain and essential features of the construction are the small openings in the upper portion of the envelop or cover, through which the letter or contents of the envelop is adapted to be inserted andthe tongue or strip secured within the saine. 9o
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An envelop or cover for letters or other articles, provided with a small transverse opening in. the top thereof, and having an independent tongue or strip projecting through said opening, over which the letter is adapted to be rolled and inserted tl'lrough the opening into the envelop.
2. An envelop or cover for letters or other articles provided with a small openin g, having IOO a tongue or strip secured upon the inside thereof, adapted to engage a letter or other article, and retain the sznne Within the envelop, whereby the contents cannot be Withdrawn Without damage to the envelop.
3. An envelop or cover for letters or other articles, provided with it small openingin the top thereof, and having secured upon the inside of the same t tongue or projection, eX- tending through said opening, said tongue bein g provided upon the lower portion thereof with oblique incisions or slits, adapted to engege it puncture in the contents of the envelop, and retain the same Within the envelop.
l. An envelop or cover for letters or other articles, having :t small opening formed at the juncture of the mitin or body portion and the upper flap, which opening is unelosed when the flap is folded and the envelop is sealed, and a tongue or projection secured within the envelop and extending outwardly through seid opening in the top thereof, said tongue having slits or projections upon the lower portion thereof, adapted to engage a puncture in the contents of the envelop, which is adapted to be rolled around the tongue and inserted through said snmll opening after the envelop has been sealed.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing` as my invention I have signed my 11a-nie, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 5th day of October, 1895.
