PICK-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561 ,726, dated June 9, 1896.

Be it known that 1, JOHN B. POUK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spring Valley, in the county of Bureau and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Pickllandle, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to picks, and more particularly to the means for securing the handle to the pick-head.
The obj set of the invention is to provide a fastening of the character mentioned which shall. embody in its construction improved means whereby the head maybe speedily at tached to and detached from the handle, and also wherein the handle, at its point of connection to the head, shallbe strengthened and the possibility of fracture at that point di minished.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fastening which shall be so formed that accidentaldisplacement of the head will be obviated and a more secure union of head and handle be obtained.
' In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pick embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the brace. Fig. 45 is a similar view of the bracket.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a pick-head, in which is formed the usual eye 2. This eye 2 receives the end of the handle 3, which may be of any suitable material, and
secured to one side of said handle 3 is a brace 4. The brace i is provided with a shouldered end 5, and intermediate the ends of said brace is formed a shoulder 6, the space between the shoulder O and the end 5 being partially rounded. Secured to the handle 3, opposite the brace 4, is an L-shaped bracket 7, said brace and bracket being held together and permanently fastened to the handle by bolts 8. One end 9 of the bracket 7 is provided with an opening 10, through which passes a clamping-bolt 11, adapted to enter a threaded aperture 12 in the pick-head, said aperture 12 being formed adjacent to one end of the eye 2 and extending only partly through the head 1.
To unite the head and handle, the end of the latter is inserted through the eye 2 of the head. The shouldered end 5 of the brace 4 is hooked upon the outer side of the head, the inner side of the latter bearing against the shoulder 6 and the end 9 of the bracket 7. The rounded portion between the end 5 and the shoulder 6 snugly fits into one end of the eye 2, said rounded portion being of a length just equal to the thickness of the head at the eye. The clamping-bolt 11, entering the aperture 12, is screwed therein and gradually draws the head 1 toward the bracket 7, thus firmly securing the head and handle together and forming a simple but substantial fastening.
It is apparent from the preceding description that in this invention is embodied a very desirable means for securing pick-heads and one which may be easily constructed. By simply loos enin g the clamping-bolt 11 the head will drop off of itself and a new head almost instantly placed upon the handle. Furthermore, the brace 4L and the bracket 7 form strengthening-ribs for the handle at the point of connection with the head, thereby lessening the liability to break at that point. It is also evident that a handle provided with the improved fastening herein described will sufiice for a number of heads and the necessity of providing a'separate handle for each is dispensed with.
I claim as my invention As an improvement in pick-head fastenings, the combination, With a pick-head having an eye and a handle disposed therein, of a brace secured to one side of said handle, said brace passing through the eye of said head and provided with shoulders adapted to engage the outer and inner sides of the head, an L-shaped bracket also secured to said handle opposite to the brace, bolts connecting the brace and bracket and securing the same to the handle, and a clamping-bolt disposed in an opening formed in said L-shaped bracket, said clamping bolt engaging a my own I have hereto affixed my signature in threaded aperture formed in the pick-head the presence of two witnesses. adjacent to one end of the eye thereof, Whereby said head is prevented being displaced J OHN B.
