SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Batent N o. 561,264, dated .Tune 2,1896. Application filed December 28,1895. Serial No. 573,634. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, JASON W. MACY, acitizen of the United States, residing at Searsborough, in the county of Poweshiek and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Graders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others Vskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in road-scrapers; and it has for its objects, among others, to provide a simple, cheap, and light road grader or scraper that can be capable of accomplishing more work in a given time than the old forms and that with much less exertion and wear on the horsesor wear upon the scraper. I provide a light scraper mounted on a frame and provided with rollers having means for adjustment so as to change their position to suit the character of the work to be done. The bearings for the axles of these rollers are extended to forni handles.

The device as a whole is simple, composed of few parts and those readily assembled, and not liable to get out of order or to be injured in use.

Other objects and advantages of the inven tion will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.

The invention in this instance resides in the peculiar combinations and the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, 'and then particularly7 pointed out in the claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form apart of this specication, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved road-grader. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical crosssection through the aXlesof the rear rollers. Fig. 4. is a detail showing the construction of the handles.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the shovel or scraper, which may be of any suitable size and capacity, the sides being tapered and diverging, as shown, and the point slightly turned up, as seen at a. To the sides near their front end are secured the arms or braces B, the forward ends of which are secured to the pole or tongue O in any well-known or suitable manner. The ends are first passed through suitable hangers or guide-loops D, depending from the under side of the transverse bar E, to which the rear end of the tongue is secured in any desirable way. The braces or arms may be curved more or less, as may be found most desirable. This forms -a very strong and light machine.

Secured to the under side of the scraper near the rear end thereof are the flanged plates or brackets F, in the vertical portions of which are journaled the transverse shafts G, carrying the rollers H. There are preferably two sets of these rollers, being, of course, of different diameters, those at the rear being larger than those at the front. The innermost of these plates or brackets are extended rearward, as shown, and are bent or folded uponv themselves to form the handles I, by which the scraper may be tilted more or less to make it cut deeper or not so deep, as may be required. These handles serve also for other purposes, such as an aid in dumping the scraper when desired.

Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

l. The combination with the scraper, of the anged plates secured to the under side thereof and one of each pair extended to form a handle, as set forth.

2. The road-grader described, consisting of the scraper, the brace-arms secured thereto, the cross-bar having hangers through which said brace-arms extend, the tongue secured to said brace-arms, the flanged brackets on the under side of the scraper and extended to form integral handles, and the rollers of different diameters carried by shafts journaledin said brackets, substantially as specified.
