Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELBERT OGDEN STEELE, OF NEYV YORK, N. Y.
SUPPORTER OR HOLDER FOR SHADES OR GLOBES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,174, dated June 2, 1896.
Application filed January 30, 1896- Serial No. 577,352. (No model.)
T all whom, it may concern: clamps D, which are yoke-shaped in form Beit known that I, ELBERT OGDEN STEELE, and preferably composed of spring-wire, and a citizen of the United States, and a resident the sides of these yoke-shaped clamps are of New York, in the county of New York and outwardly inclined, as shown in Fig. 6, and 5 State of New York, have invented certain new formed on the sides and bottoms thereof are and useful Improvements in Supports or Holdnotches or recesses d, and the outer ends of ers for Shades or Globes, of which the followeach side are also provided with handles ing is a specification, reference being had to composed of rings or loops d which are the accompanying drawings, forming a part formed by bending said ends downwardly 10 thereof, in which similar letters of reference and inwardly. The base ringor support A .indicate corresponding parts. is also provided with radial inwardly-direct- This inventionrelates to shade or globe suped arms E, which connect with a central cirports for gas and other burners, and the ob cular head E, which is provided with a cenjcct thereof is to provide an improved device tral circular opening G, which is adapted to T5 of this class by means of which the shade or be placed over or mounted upon the gas-fixglobe may be held in place upon its support ture in the usual manner, and the operation without the aid of the set-screws and similar will be readily understood from the foregodevices heretofore employed. ing description when taken in connection with The inventionis fully disclosed in the folthe accompanying drawings.
2o lowing specification, of which the accompa- In connecting the shade or globe with my nyin g drawings form a part, in which improved support or holder the base thereof Figure 1 is a perspective view of my imis placed within the annular flange or rim proved shade or globe support; Fig. 2, a side a and rests upon the annular flange or rim view showing a portion ofa globe in position a, and these shades or globes are provided 25 thereon; Fig. 3,aside view of a spring-clamp with outwardly-directed annular beads or which I employ; Figs. 4 and 5, similar views rims at the bottom thereof in the usual manof modified forms thereof; Fig. 6, a bottom ner. One of the spring-clamps D is then inplan view of said clamp, and Fig. 7 a plan serted through the cut-away portion of each view of a detail of a modification. of the ears B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and 0 In the practice of my invention I provide a beneath the inwardly-directed projections I), circular base-ring A, which is provided at its and when in this position the separate sides bottom with an upwardly-directed annular thereof are shoved forward, so that the inner flange or rim a, which is adapted to serve as end will press upon the base of the shade or a support for the bottom of the shade or globe above the bottom rim or bead thereon 3 5 globe,'and which is also provided with an and securely hold the same in place. It will upwardly-directed flange or rim a which is be understood that the notches or recesses adapted to surround or inclose the bottom of operate in connection with the sides of the said globe or shade. ears B to hold the clamps in place, and the Formed on the upper portion of the up forwardly-directed hooksor fingers b prcvent o 40 wardly-directed annular flange or rim o and the entire withdrawal of said clamps. The at regular intervals thereon, are upwardly, spring action of the sides of the yokes or outwardly, and downwardly curved ears B, clamps D is such as to cause the notches or three of which are preferably employed, and recesses formed therein to operate in connecthe central portion of each of these cars is tion with the sides of the cars 13, so as to se- 5 45 cut out, as shown -in Figs. 1 and 2, and the curely hold said yokes or clamps in any desides of the central cut-away portion are prosired position, and whenever it is necessary vided with inwardly-directed projections 12. to move. them in either direction the sides Formed integrally with the annular flange thereof must be pressed together, as will be or rim a are inwardly-directed hooks or finreadily understood. This device forms a per- I00 50 gers b which are located in the opening fectly secure and safe holder for the globe or formed in the ears, and I also provide spring-. shade and the breaking of the latter by the operation thereof, which frequently occurs when set-screws and similar devices are em ployed, is avoided.
Although I have shown and described my improved shade or globe support as applicable to gas-burners, it is evident that the same may be applied to lamps and similar illuminating devices by simply decreasing the size or diameter of, the base-ring and increasing that of the central head F so that it will fit over. the base of an ordinary burner.
In Fig. 7 I have shown a plan view of the ear B, in which the central opening therein is wider at the outer than at the inner end, and by this arrangement I provide four bearing-points for the sides of the neck or clamp D, two for each side, and by means of this construction said yoke or clamp is more securely held in position.
It is evident that changes in the form and arrangement of the various parts of my improved shade or globe may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1'. The herein described shade or globe holder, which consists of the usual base-ring having an upwardly-directed annular flange or rim, and an inwardly-directed flange or rim at the bottom thereof, said upwardly-directed annular flange or rim being provided with outwardly-curved ears, the central portions of which are cut away, and the sides thereof, being provided with inwardly-directed projections, and said upwardly-(1irected annular flange or rim being also provided with inwardly-directed hooks or fingers which are located in the cut-away portion of said ears, and spring yokes or clamps which are adapted to be inserted through the opening formed by cutting away the central portion. of said ears and which operate in connection with the sides thereof, to hold the globe or shade in place, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein described shade or globe holder, which consists of the usual base-ring having an upwardly-directed annular flange or rim, and an inwardly-directed flange or rim at the bottom thereof, said upwardly-di reeted annular flange or rim being provided with outwardly-curved ears, the central portions of which are cut away, and the sides thereof, being provided with imvardly-directed projections and said upward]y-directed annular flange or rim being also provided with inwardly-directed hooks or fin gers which are located in the cut-away portion of said ears and spring yokes or clamps which are adapted to be inserted through the opening formed by cutting away the central portion of said ears and which operate in connection with the sides thereof, to hold the globe or shade in place, said inwardly-directed hooks or fingers being adapted to prevent the withdrawal of said yokes or clamps, and the sides of said yokes or clamps being provided with notches or recesses, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 29th day of January, 1806.
