Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1909.
Application filed April 9, 1909. Serial No. 488,812.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. LEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Lznnp-Chimney, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to lamps, and particularly t0 means for centering the chimney of a lamp when it is set in position.
The object of the invention is to provide a lamp chimney having improved means which will facilitate its being guided to its proper position on the burner without necessitating the exercise of great care.
The invention is especially useful when applied to lamps having metal chimneys or chimneys partly of metal, such as are used as heating lamps for incubators or brooders.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a lamp having a chimney constructed as described; Fig. 2 is a plan of the lamp shown in Fig. 1, part of the handle of the chimney being broken away; Fig. 8 is a bottom plan of a lamp chimney representing the same removed from the lamp; and Fig. 4 is a sec tion on the line H of Fig. 2, and further illustrating the details of the construction.
Referring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents the body of the lamp, which is provided with a burner The middle portion of this burner 2 is formed into a rounded wick dome or bonnet 3, and around the base of this dome a horizontal annular flange or chin'iney seat a is formed. The outer edge of this chimney seat l: isprovided with an upwardly projecting lip 5, which may be scalloped, as shown. As indicated, the wick dome or bonnet tapers slightly in an upward direction.
in applying my invention, I provide a chimney 6, preferably of metal, and having a handle 7 attached to the side thereof, as indicated, which handle enables the chimney to be conveniently removed and replaced.
This chimney is in the form of a plain shell, but at its lower end is provided with a plurality of integral tongues or fins 8, which project inwardly in a horizontal plane and at right angles to the axis of the chimney. These tongues are of sufiicient length so that when the chimney is seated their inner edges lie substantially against the side of the wick dome at its base. When the chimney is being placed in position it will be evident that the inner edges of these tongues will come against the upper portion of the wick dome, and if this dome is of circular form at its base and tapering upwardly, the tongues will evidently guide the chimney into a central position with respect to the dome, and as the chimney descends it seats itself centrally 011 the chimney seat 4-, the lower edge of the chimney lying adjacent to the lip 5, as shown in Fig. at. ()11 account of this construction the chimney can be placed quickly in position without exercising great care as to its being properly centered, for it centers itself, as it were, automatically.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A lamp having a burner with a subst antially circular wick dome, said wick dome presenting a rounded upper face, and a chimney having guiding means near the lower edge thereof engaging said wick dome and affording means for centering said chimney on said burner.
2. A lamp chimney having inwardly pro jecting members, in combination with a lamp burner having a substantially circular Wick dome adapted to be engaged by said members and afl'ording means for guiding the chimney into a central position.
lamp having a burner with a substantially circular wick dome, and a chimney having inwardly projecting tongues adapted to engage the sides of said dome to center said chimney as it descends, and a chimney seat disposed around said dome and supporting said chimney.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE .l-l. LEE. ll itnesses HARRY ROWLEY, STELLA CHAsE.
