G. 3.. ADAMS.
CLASP.
No. 560,670. Patented May 26, 1896.
UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. ADAMS, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE TRAUT & IIINE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,670, dated May 26, 1896.
Application filed November 16, 1895. erial No. 569,184- (No model.)
' and it consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, all as will now be described, and pointed out specifically in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing the clasp attached to a garter. Fig. 2 is a view showing the two parts of the clasp disconnected. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of one of the parts of the clasp. Fig. 4. is a section 011 the line w 00 of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.
In the drawings one part or member, A, of the clasp consists of a sheet-metal plate having the slots a at each end for attachment to the garter when used as a garter-clasp; but when not so used other means of attaching the clasp maybe employed. At or near the middle of the plate is an opening a, formed by removing a portion of the metal, the metal being left attached at the outer end of said opening, thereby forming a hook or tongue 0. the head a of which is preferably circular and concavo-convex in cross-section. The other member or plate, B, of the clasp has an oblong slot b therein, of a size to permit the entrance of the tongue a as hereinafter explained.
Around the inner edge of the plate is formed 40 a protecting or strengthening bead b, which meets the slot 12 on each side thereof, the depressed portion of the plate within the bead being curved or conveXed, preferably, bystriking up the metal at or near the middle in the form of a circular spud b forming thereby a spring-catch adapted to fit under the head of the cooperating hook, as hereinafter explained. A slot 11 is shown in the plate for the attachment to a garter.
In coupling the parts of the clasp together the part Bis placed over the part A, the tongue a extending up through the slot b, and the edge of the spud-like elevation resting just behind the tongue a Now by pulling on the part B the spud will be depressed as it passes under the edge of the tongue, and after passing will spring up and fit in the concavity of the tongue, thus locking the parts together.
By removing a portion of the metal on each side of the central elevation, as shown, a swivel action of the parts will be permitted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- In a clasp, the combination with the member A having the hook or tongue formed with a concavo-convex head, of the cooperating member or plate, having a depressed portion, curved or conveXed, as at 6 thereby forming a spring-catch, adapted to. be received and drawn under the head of the cooperating hook to lock the parts together; substantially as described.
GEORGE E. ADAMS.
