Description
UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE..
SAMUEL CLARKE, 0E NEW YORK, N. Y.
BED-'BUG PROTECTOR FOVR BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 56,008, dated July 3, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL CLARKE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Device for Protecting Bedsteads from Bed-Bugs and other Crawling Insects; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in theart to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The drawing represents a vertical central section of my invention.
This invention relates to a new and simple device for protecting bedsteads from bed-bugs and other crawling insects, and is `based upon the factthat insects of the class specified cannot pass over the thin or sharp lower edge of a pendent plate.
The invention consists in placing athin band or annular pendent projection within an inverted cup-shaped base, one being provided for each leg or foot of the bedstead to rest upon, so that the bugs cannot pass from the iloor up the legs of the bedstead.
A represents a support, which may be of cast metal, and formed with a concave exterior, diminishing in diameter from its base to its upper end, as shown clearly in the drawing.
B represents what may be termed an inverted cup, which is secured on the upper end of the support A by ascrew, a, and (l is a ring, which is fitted on the upper end of the support and rests upon a shoulder, b, thereon, the upper surface ofthe ring being flush with the upper surface of the support7 and the cup resting upon the ring as well as the support. The cup and ring may both be of cast metal, and the diameter of the cup equal to the diameter of the lower end of the support, the ring O being less in diameter than the cup,
but considerably greater than the diameter of the upper end of the support.
The ring C has a pendent flange, D, secured to its edge and extending all around it. This flangeD is formed of athin metal plate, so tb atit will have a thin or sharp lower edge, as shown clearly in the drawing, said edge being about equidistant between the lower edge of the cup B and the support A. These devices thus formed serve as bases for the legs of the bedl stead to rest upon, and the bugs or insects cannot pass from the door and reach the legs of the bedstead for the reason that they cannot pass around the thin or sharp lower edge of the pendent flange D,that serving as an effectual barrier to their ascent.
The device may be manufactured at a very moderate cost-a mere trifleand the same principle may be applied to the base-board or surface of a room by having a strip of thin sheet metal attached to the base-board and bent or curved down so as to prevent the bu gs from crawling around its lower edge.
The inverted cup B is designed to protect the lian ge D. The latter being of thin sheet metal would, without that protection, be liable to be bent or injured.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of the cup B and ring
