SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,808, dated May 12, 1896*.

To all whom, t 11i/ay concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS FRANCIS MUR- PHY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindow-Fasteners, of which the following is a Specification, reference being had to the accompanyi ng drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to locks for windowsashes, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which consists of two parts, one of which is adapted to be connected with the upper part of the frame ot the lower sash and the other to the lower part of the frame of the upper sash, and that part which is connected with the lower sash heilig provided with a spring-operated bolt which operates in connection with the part which is connected with the upper sash, so as to securely lock said sashes together; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is tull5T disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying' drawings form a part, in which-- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved sash-lock, showing the saine connected with the upper and lower sashes and in operative position; and Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2.
' In the drawings forming' part of this application, A represents the bottom portion of the f rame of the upper sash, and B the upper part of the .frame of the lower sash, and in the practice of my invention I provide a sashlocl: comprising a plate O, which is adapted to be secured to the frame of the lower sash, and a plate D, which is adapted to be secured to the frame of the upper sash.
The plate D has a vertical curved or segmental shoulder or projection d formed thereon, in the outer side of which is formed a hole or opening d2, (shown in dotted lines in Figs. l and 2,) and pivotally connected with the plate O is a swinging arm Gr, which is provided near its central portion with an upwardlydirected shoulder g, and the free end of which is provided with a curved or segmental head 4said hole or opening by said Spring.
g2, and passing through the shoulder G and the curved or segmental head g2 is a sliding spring-operating bolt ll, which is provided inside of the shoulder gwith a pin h, and mounted on said sliding bolt, between. the shoulder g and the segmental head g2, is a spiral spring K, one end ot which bears upon the shoulder g and the other or outer end of which is secured to the sliding bolt- The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. lVhen itis desired to lock the upper and the lower sashes together, it is onlynccessary to take hold of the pivoted arm ll and to swing it into the position shown in Fig. l. In this operation the sliding bolt ll is driven backward when it strikes the shoulder d. on the plate D, against the operation of the spring K, until the end thereot` reaches the hole or opening d2, when it is projected into ln this position of the parts it will be apparent that the upper an d lower sashes will be securely)v locked together, and they will be held in this position until the sliding bolt ll is withdrawn from its connection with the plate D or the shoulder d, formed thereon, which may be done by pulling outwardly on the bolt H or the pi n 7L, when the arm G may be again turned to one side, after which the sashes may be raised and lowered as desired.
My improved sash-lock also prevents the sashes from rattling, the forni of the segmental head g2 acting as a cam in connection with the shoulder cl of the plate D to produce this result, and in this ope ration itis also aided by the spring K, which may be so arranged as to force the bolt into the shoulder or projection CZ ou the plate D with such force as to prevent the rattling of the sashes, but it will be apparent that the sliding bolt and the spring mounted thereon may be so arranged as to produce this result alone.
My invention is not limited to the exact forni, construction, and arrangement of parts hereinbefore described, and itis evident that changes therein and modifications thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacriiicing its advantages.

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A sashlock for windows comprising a plate which is adapted to be secured to the lower sash, an arm pivotally connected therewith, a sliding` spring-operated bolt connected with said arm and a plate adapted to be secured to the upper sash, and provided with a hole or opening into which said bolt is adapted to be projected, said arm being' provided at its outer end with a curved or segmental head and with an upwardly-directed shoulder through which the bolt passes, and said bolt being also provided with a spiral spring which is mounted thereon between said shoulder and said head, substantially as shown and described.
