LACING-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,769, dated May 5, 1896. Application filed October 10,1895. Serial l l'o. 666,2l5x (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MELLEN N. EBAY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massacl1usetts,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lacing-Ilooks, of
which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to covered lacinghooks and the process of making the same; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the accompanying drawings, and to the claim hereto appended, and in which my invention is clearly pointed out.
Figures 1 and 2 are respectively a plan and a side elevation of a partially-formed blank as it appears after the first swaging operation. Figs. 3 and l are respectively a plan and a longitudinal section of the same blank after the second swaging operation. Figs..5 and 6 are similar views of the same blank after the third swaging operation. Fig. 7 is a central vertical section of the metal hook before the covering is applied. Fig. 8 is a vertical section on line so an on Fig. 7 looking toward the neck of the hook and showing a modified shank. Fig. 0 is a section on the same plane as Fig. '7 after the plastic covering has been applied.
In the drawings, A is the metal hook comprising the shank a, the flange I), the neck 0, and the outer head cl. This metal hook may be made from wire or sheet metal, and may have a cylindrical cavity formed in its shank, as shown in Fig. '7', or the opening in said shank may extend entirely through the same, as shown in Fig. 8. In manufacturing said hook I first form a blank, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, by the employment of suitable dies, thereby forming the shank-flange and neck complete, except that the shank may or may not require to be drilled out to deepen the cavity therein according as the hook is made of wire or sheet metal.
The head (Z of the blank is formed with an extension 6 of metal projecting outward from the edge of the head proper and extending from the neck on one side around the edge of said head to the neck on the other side, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. head end of said blank to other dies to turn the extension e upward at right angles or nearly so to the plane of the outer surface of the head cl, as shown in Figs. 8 and 4. The head end of the blank is then subjected to the action of other dies to turn the upturned rib 6, formed from the extension 6, inward into an inclined position, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and at the same time the neck is bent to bring the head (I over the shank a, with the flange 1) between said shank and the head. The upturned rib c on the outer surface of the head extends from the neck on one side around the outer edge of the upper surface of said head to the neck on the opposite side, so that as viewed in plan it is in the form of a horseshoe. applied to the outer surface of said head under pressure, so as to fill the space inside of said rib and embed it with said material, as shown in Fig. 9. By this construction a comparatively cheap and at the same time efiective and durable covered lacing-hook is produced.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A lacing-hook having a metal body, comprising a shank or fastening device, a flange to bear upon the material in which it is set, a curved neck, and an outer head, provided on its outer surface with an upwardly-projecting and inwardly-inclined rib or lip extending from the neck on one side around the outer edge of said head to the neck on the other side; and a covering of plastic material inclosing said rib and the outer edge and upper surface of said head.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 5th day of October, A. I). 1895.
